Printed in a limited run of just 250 copies, this edition is rare and features William Smith's detailed description of England from 1588. Edited from the original manuscript housed in the British Museum, this exclusive edition includes an introduction by Henry Wheatley and Edmund W. Ashbee. Smith also offers intriguing insights into some of the 'Wonders In England,' revealing, for instance, the construction of Stonehenge by a former king of England in 470 AD to commemorate the demise of 460 nobles (refer to page 6). Complementing Smith's narrative are 28 chromolithographic plates, including two folding plates…

Description:
This is Neville Chamberlain's personal copy of J. Shield Nicholson's "A Project of Empire" with his bookplate on the front pastedown. This is particularly interesting because the theme of Nicholson's book centers around Adam Smith's laissez-faire ideas of economics and Chamberlain, who was first a business man and then served as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Ramsey Macdonald's goverment. Also about the time of this book's publication Chamberlain started to become politically active and in 1911 he successfully stood as a Liberal Unionist for Birmingham City Council. Good Condition. Green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Neville Chamberlain's bookplate to front pastedown. Binding and hinges are firm. Pages are clean. Boards have moderate edge-wear with some bumping to corners. Notable split to bottom of spine and front board joint. Moderate tanning to spine. Debossed stamp on title page with 'Presentation Copy'.
