All of the defining characteristics of baroque poetry are shown to their best advantage in this collection by Marino's friend and follower. Several of Achillini's poems (according to a note at the end of the text) had been erroneously attributed to Marino. This collection also includes an essay, and Achillini's correspondence (including the letter on the plague that Manzoni incorporated sarcastically into I Promessi Sposi, and the description of a monk that Croce called "not only significant, but beautiful"). First published in 1656.

The book's production was shared by the Friends of the Princeton University Library, the Typophiles Society, and La Casa del Libro. A limited number of copies of the press run bore the imprint of each separate entity. 800 bore the imprint of the Grolier Club.

Bound in rustic contemporary vellum over boards, in Latin American style (laced to text block with headband cores), titled in ink on spine, worn, peeling at fore-edge of upper board; scorched (?) on lower board. Old sewing on spine. Title page loose. Damp stain in lower margin of first 20 leaves, affecting title page. Sewing is inexpert, yet holding. Protected in clamshell case. Charming, well-thumbed, American copy of the popular compilation of fables.

Very Good. 17 cm; 11 (of 12) monthly issues, January through March, May through December, continuously paginated 1-208, 275-924 (lacks April, pp. 209-274), and woodcut title page in each number. All issues variously bound in polychrome or monochrome woodblock printed wraps, mostly in floral patterns, stab-sewn. Some leaves darkened but overall bright and clean. Reference: Motta, Bibliografia storica ticinese, p. 122, #1. Il Corrier Zoppo ("The Limping Messenger") ran from December 1756 to December 1762, out of Lugano, Switzerland. Eighteenth-century edition of Virgilian imitations by Luigi Alamanni (1495-1556). Alamanni wrote his elegant "La Coltivazione" while in exile for anti-Medici leanings. The "Tuscan Epigrams" comprise the last 30 pages.
