ORIGIN OF THE MYTHMAKING OF THE ENGLISH REFORMATION.16mo. Bound in 20th century full calf; spine with 4 raised bands; red leather label with gilt letters on spine. Imprinted at London by John Tisdale, dwelling in Knight riders Streate. Anno 1560. Second Complete Edition. Two parts in one volume. The definitive edition of Bale's work. 56 leaves (112 pages) longer than the 1551 edition. STC 1274. Bale's Englysh votaryes established the received history of the English church and Reformation, including the notions that the English church was the purest of the early Christian churches, and that the entire history of England could be understood as s battle against the influence of the Roman Catholic Church. Bale's anti-Catholic chronicle, full of salacious accounts of medieval English clergy, had a decisive influence on John Foxe and his Book of Martyrs. "… Bale establish[ed] the myth of the pristine pre-Augustinian English Church, the golden age before 597, which was to be influential in Elizabethan…

Hardcover. Very Good. With a folding engraved plan, entitled A Copy of the Draught from which the Bountys Launch was built, by Mackenzie and 3 folding engraved charts, one printed on pale blue paper, by J. Walker after W. Harrison. 4to. Bound in ½-calf over marbled boards; spine with 5 gilt bands, speckled leaf edges. Printed in London For George Nicol, 1790. First Edition. With the initial 2 pages of advertisement. The advertisement acts as preface, and indicates the general circumstances before the narrative begins, which would later be elaborated on in A Voyage to the South Sea, published in 1792. The story of Fletcher Christians mutinous commandeering of the Bounty, and the setting adrift of Bligh and his 18 loyal crewmen on a 23-foot launch is a tale known to all. Bligh is now considered to have been an enlightened naval officer. Bountys log shows that Bligh resorted to punishments relatively sparingly. He scolded when other captains would have whipped, and whipped when other captains would…

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SIGN LANGUAGE 4to. Bound in 20th century rustic boards, with marbled paper spine. In Vicenza, Appresso Francesco Grossi, 1616. First Edition. (Norman 264, Garrison-Morton 3344, and Krivatsy 1516). "Bonifacio's 'book is one of the earliest to be published in Europe that is devoted exclusively to gesture. It was published in Vicenza in 1616 under the following title which, as will be seen, provides a good summary of the aims and contents of the work: "'The Art of Signs with which a visible language is formed, deals [dealing] with the mute expressiveness that is none other than an eloquent silence. It is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the signs that are made by us by the parts of our body, revealing their meanings which are confirmed by famous authors. In the second part it is shown how all the liberal and mechanical arts make use of this knowledge. New material pertinent for all men and particularly for Princes who, because of…

1768. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Illustrated with a New and Accurate Map of Corsica. 8vo. 20th century marbled half-calf; spine with 5 raised bands. Glasgow, Printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis for Edward and Charles Dilly in the Poultry, London. (1768). First Edition. One of the most wonderfully written travel accounts in English from the 18th century. The book is divided in two parts, the first giving a detailed description and history of Corsica, and the second containing a journal of Boswells voyage to the island. It was especially this latter part that excited the public, being a lively account of Boswells quixotic adventures in Corsica and his association with General Paoli. Pascal Paoli was a Corsican patriot, who in 1755 succeeded in liberating the island from Genoese oppression and was chosen president under a republican constitution. In 1769, however, his troops were defeated by the French, and fled to England. Boswell brought Paoli to London, introduced him to the circle of…

Printed by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, London, 1791. First Edition. Limited to 1750 copies. Printed on light blue paper. Vol. I has the correct give reading on page 135, line 10, generally considered the second state (although, as Pottle notes, booksellers have given this rather uninteresting point more attention than it deserves.) BRADBURY, RAY. Masks. Edited by Donn Albright. Illustrated. 8vo. Original cloth, in dust wrapper, enclosed in publisher's box. Gauntlet Press 2008. First Edition. Limited to 52 copies, this being letter OO, signedby Bradbury on a special limitation page.
The Masks was to be Bradbury's second novel (he considers The Martian Chronicles to be his first). In the late-forties Bradbury applied for a Guggenheim grant and submitted an early version of The Masks. While he didn't get the grant, he continued to tinker with it until 1952 or 1953. Editor Donn Albright has assembled the fragments into a cohesive story so the reader can compare Bradbury's first draft with later thoughts on the proposed novel. This lettered edition also includes six never-before-published stories written during this period: "The Face of Natalie," "They Never Got Mad," "The Drothldo," "In the Eye of the Beholder," "Gallagher the Great" and "The Doll." Also included are an alternate version of "Walker in the Night" and the previously… Read More

SOURCE OF THE TITLE PRIDE AND PREJUDICEBURNEY, FRANCES. Cecilia, or Memoirs of an Heiress. By the Author of Evelina. 12mo. Bound in full speckled calf with gilt-lettered spine labels; page edges dyed yellow. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son. 1782. First Edition. 5 volumes. With the misspelled catchword on page 235 of vol. II and the mispaginated page 159 in vol. V. The first edition of Fanny Burney's second novel, recounting the trials and tribulations of a wealthy young orphan who, launched into society, must guard her fortune and virtue from the depredations of assorted suitors. A follow-up to her hugely successful Evelina, Cecilia is "less unstudied" than the earlier work, "with greater polish, and a 'literary quality' that gave rise to the report that Dr. Johnson had corrected it." (Kunitz & Haycraft)An interesting incidental note is the appearance near the end of the book of a phrase that would gain immortality in the hands of a slightly later author:"'The whole of this unfortunate business,'…

Limited to 825 copies signed by Yeats. This is copy is #772.Edited by Peter Allt and Russell K. Alspach. Thick 8vo. Original two-toned cloth, in publisher's slipcase. New York 1957. The planning of this volume originated in the late 1930s. With World War II looming and Yeats' fragile health, it was decided to have the limitation pages signed by the poet then, before publication. The final edition was delayed until 1957, further compounded by the death of Allt in 1954. Included are: Preface, Introduction, Bibliography, Collations, Appendices, Index to Titles, and Index to First Lines. This is the definitive variorum edition of Yeats' poems. It was the editors' intention to note all of the changes that Yeats made to his poems in the course of their successive printings. The record begins in 1885 with the edition of The Dublin University Review, which contained his first two published poems. It ends with the two-volume definitive edition of his poetry in 1949, the proofs of which he had corrected shortly…
