Jr. " Charles Francis Adams, Jr. was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry on December 28, 1861. He fought with distinction during the Gettysburg Campaign, where his company was heavily engaged at the Battle of Aldie. On September 8, 1864 he was commissioned as the lieutenant colonel of the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry (officially designated "5th Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Cavalry"). He was promoted to colonel and assumed command of the regiment on March 14, 1865, shortly before the end of the war. At that time regiment was assigned guarding Confederate prisoners of war at Point Lookout, Maryland. In the case in support of the plea of justification the defendant offered the following warrants, acknowledgements of service . . . The plaintiff objected to the readings of the said papers ad proved that they were all in the handwriting of Hezekeah Harrison. . ." Henry Clay, American lawyer and statesman responsible for the Missouri Compromise, was Secretary of State and Whig candidate for president. Official appointments of this vintage are quite scarce and those of Military connotation are especially desirable. Together with a steel engraving by J. B. Longacre taken from Clintons official portrait painted at Albany, New York, December 1824, by the famous artist George Catlin. Both pieces are framed under glass in gold highlighted document frames. Although not a Catholic, Cobbett took up the cause of Catholic Emancipation. Between 1824 and 1826, he published his History of the Protestant Reformation, a broadside against the traditional Protestant historical narrative of the British reformation, stressing the lengthy and often bloody persecutions of Catholics in Britain and Ireland. At this time, Catholics were still forbidden to enter certain professions or to become members of Parliament. The law was no longer enforced, but it was still officially a crime to attend mass or build a Catholic church. In 1820 on returning from the United States, where he had fled fearing arrest for his arguably seditious writings, Cobbett established a plant nursery at Kensington, where he trialed a dwarf strain of maize he found growing in a French cottage garden which grew well in England's shorter summer. To help sell this variety, Cobbett published Treatise on Cobbett's Corn. Charmingly written, including anecdotes of his travels through America, and the farming techniques and people he encounters there. An English pamphleteer, farmer and journalist, William Cobbett gained a reputation as a rabble rouser, famed for his political publications aimed at working class readers. He believed that reforming Parliament and abolishing the rotten boroughs would help to end the poverty of farm laborers, and he attacked the borough-mongers, sinecurists and "tax-eaters" relentlessly. He was also against the Corn Laws, a tax on imported grain and although he was not a Catholic, he became a fiery advocate of Catholic Emancipation in Britain. Cobbett had spent his youth in the army, stationed in New Brunswick, where he felt the officers were corrupt and the soldiers underpaid and mistreated. He published The Soldier's Friend in 1792, complaining on these grievances, which caused him to fear reprisal, and so he fled to France. Unfortunately, he arrived at the height of the French Revolution, so his plan to learn French more thoroughly was sidetracked as he continued on to the United States. Once there he found employment teaching English to French exiles, learning their language in the process, resulting in his French Grammar.Board corners and edges are bumped a bit, with some staining; leaves are clean and amply margined; uncut; with the last leaves of quire K unopened, and with some mild foxing and occasional mild toning; o/w Very Nice.

Presentation copy inscribed by Cocteau, "à ma . . . cher Gérard d'Houville de beaux coeur Jean." Marie de Heredia, also known by her pen-name Gérard d'Houville, was a French novelist and poet. She married poet Henri de Régnier, but had a long-term relationship with Pierre Louÿs, who was probably the father of her son. She also took several other lovers, and her association with openly lesbian colleagues led to rumors about her own sexuality. An interesting association copy. Very Nice.
