BINDING: new Gothic hand-sewn oak binding by Arthur Green of Malvern; tawed quarter leather over quarter-sawn oak boards, quires hand-sewn on four double-cords creating four raised spine bands, board leather blind-tooled with period style rosettes and fleurs-de-lys within panel of diagonal blind triple fillets, hand-sewn Gothic double headbands of alternate hand-dyed indigo and undyed linen thread, hand-made brass hasps and clasps ornamented in period style; an exceptionally attractive recreation of a Gothic hand-sewn binding employing medieval techniques contemporaneous with the date the book was printed. Seymour and Browne/"Phiz. 8vo; xii, 497pp. In original publisher's red buckram binding with black and gilt tooling to spine and front board. Binding shaken (as is common for this edition), spine tips, hinges and board corners bumped/worn, unobtrusive early inscription to front endpaper, internally an uncommonly clean copy without foxing, with full complement of 8 plates by Seymour and Phiz. Overall a very presentable example, undated but undoubtedly a circa 1880 copy of the "Charles Dickens Edition" of this celebrated work.

Birmingham: Thomas Pearson, 1796. Full leather. Very Good. Early Birmingham imprint, first edition thus; 12mo; 191pp. In contemporary late eighteenth century marbled calf with flat spine divided into six compartments by gilt single fillets, head of spine and board corners worn with minor loss of leather, binding shaken but sound, early ink ownership inscription to front and rear endpapers ("Mary Band Nov. 24th 1800"), an attractive early Birmingham imprint of this popularl work first published in 1751.

First edition, two volumes, octavo; xi, [i], 413, 380pp. In original uniform publisher's brown buckram with gilt and blind decoration to spines and front boards, bindings lightly worn, original endpapers, volume one title page annotated with brief biographical details of the author, light spotting to opening and closing leaves of each volume otherwise clean and complete, with portrait frontispiece to volume one. Family association copy with the small ownership label of W.B. Drummond to each front pastedown. Attractive example in very good original state of this well researched study.
