Description:
Chicago: Geo. Lauterer Corp, 1972. Staplebound. Good. Quarto, 15pp., illustrated. LACKING one leaf (pp. 3-4), and with the order form torn out. A few stains and small creases; overall in good condition. Despite the missing page, an otherwise wonderfully illustrated catalog displaying the bejeweled and otherwise well-appointed ceremonial regalia used in the IBPOEW and its female auxiliary, the oldest extant African-American fraternal organization in America. Aprons, gloves, gavels, collars, emblems, books, etc. all abound. A highly ephemeral piece; we found none similar separately listed in OCLC. An important visual document from the era just after the Civil Rights Movement, when these kinds of segregation-era organizations with long and proud histories were in a state of flux.

Description:
[various]: IBPOEW, 1967. Staplebound. Near fine. Quarto. 24pp.; 26pp. [18]pp., illustrated. All volumes near fine, with mild flattened creases, else clean and sharp. Three souvenir booklets, for the 48th, 52nd, and 53rd annual conventions of the New England States and Eastern Canada Association of Elk Lodges--both the fraternal organization and its female auxiliary. These conventions were held in Providence, Hartford, and again in Providence, respectively. The booklets are filled with portrait illustrations of various bigwigs in the IBOPEW (both national and regional figures), as well as programming information, and a number of local advertisements geared toward convention-goers. The IBPOEW is the largest extant fraternal organization founded by African-Americans. Founded in 1897, it still maintains a membership of around half a million members. According to historian Venus Green, the Improved Elks labor activism was distinguished from other black fraternal organizations by their "cross-class…

Description:
Oslo / New York: Limited Editions Club, 1964. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Small quarto, 327pp., illustrated. A fine, crisp copy in the publisher's 3/4 brown polished calf and patterned paper over boards. In the original clear dust jacket, which is yellowed where it meets the leather (this is unavoidable), also with a few edge chips. In the publisher's slipcase, near fine, with a small split at one corner; still sound. This is number 1308 of 1500 limited copies SIGNED by Matheson on the limitation page. One of the best LEC's from this period, with appropriately bleak and arresting woodcut illustrations; unjustly undervalued, and a great deal for anyone desiring an attractive edition containing three of Ibsen's best plays.

Description:
[no place], 1900. Very good. Nine albumen prints, all mounted to cardstock, each measuring just shy of 4" x 5.5". Cards all gently curled, and some smudging to a few of the images, but all contents are legible; generally very good. The verso of each mount contains detailed handwritten prices for each item, along with variant accessories (drawer pulls, knobs, etc.). Though undated, the photographic process and style of furniture would suggest the tail end of the Victorian era, as early as 1875, and no later than 1900. One of the images is a nicely executed composite image of nine different chairs, mostly rockers, and a few which appear to be for children. The other images depict bedroom sets, drop-leaf tables, side tables, and dressers. Though the manufacturer or sales agent is not identified, we presume it to be American, probably from the Northeast or Midwest. A great example of furniture sales material from an era of sophistication in the American market.

Description:
New York: Random House, 1955. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +/near fine. Octavo, 154pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, very good or better, with a faint dampstain to thebase of the spine, not affecting the interior. In a very good dust jacket, possibly supplied (as there is no corresponding stain), with a few small abrasions and holes. This copy SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by Elaine Stritch, who played the character of Grace in the first Broadway production, on the half-title page: "To the Third "love" of my life. Elaine." Though this is mere supposition, we think the rather cryptic but unmistakably warm tone of the inscription suggests that the subject of the inscription may be her co-star in the Broadway production, Phyllis Love, who played the character of Elma Duckworth. Laid-in is a table name card which simply reads "Elaine," possibly from a cast dinner or something. Note that the book is not signed by Inge. Elaine Stritch did not sign many books, and a meaningful signed book such as…

OCLC records just three holdings, at Cleveland PL, Ohio State, and the Hagley. A great piece of manufacturing history.

Description:
Providence, RI: (Club for Colonial Reprints), 1908. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 53pp. A crisp, clean, very good copy, with notable but shallow scuffing to the white vellum spine. Bottom corners very gently rubbed. Most pages unopened; a lovely copy internally. Scarce and handsomely produced reprint of a vanishingly rare 1772 narrative of modern-day Illinois, long predating significant European-American settlement in the region. See Howes I11, which states that there is only one known copy of the original edition. This may still be true, and it must be in private hands, as an OCLC search reveals no library holdings for that first edition. As such, this fine press facsimile reprint is the first and best obtainable edition. Quite scarce, with the last easily traceable commercial appearance in 1979.

New York: Dutton, 1947. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Octavo, 286pp., illustrated. A fresh, clean copy in the publisher's blue cloth, with the spine very gently cocked, but otherwise better than usually found, about fine, in a near fine dust jacket, with some short tears at the extremities, else fresh. A nice association copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by J. Edgar Hoover in the year of publication to one of his Assistant Directors, Alex Rosen: "To Alex Rosen, With the most cordial of good wishes from his friend J. Edgar Hoover 4.16.47." Rosen, a native of Akron, Ohio, rose through the ranks of the FBI, serving as Special Agent in several locations, ultimately becoming an Assistant Director to Hoover in 1942, a position he held until Hoover's death in 1972. Rosen's retirement was briefly written up in the New York Times. Though Dutton often stated first printings, we have never seen a stated first printing of this volume, and presume this copy to be a first, especially given the early…

Description:
Washington DC: Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), 1956. Very good. 5 leaves, each about 8" x 8", each being a "wanted" poster for an African-American male, dating from 1952 to 1956. Punch holes near the top and mild age-toning to extremities, but all in very good, clean condition. These wanted posters were mailed from the FBI office in Washington to the Postmaster in South Orrington, Maine (as indicated on the verso). Each of the individuals was born in the south, though many of their alleged offenses were perpetrated in northern cities. Three of the posters indicate "criminal records" for the individuals, noting such crimes as murder, assault, larceny, and "malicious mischief." All of the individuals are wanted for "[avoidance of] prosecution to commit murder," or very similarly worded language for the same crime. Considering the era, and the sometimes-paranoid law enforcement tactics of J. Edgar Hoover (whose printed name appears on each document), one wonders the degree of guilt of any of…
