Description:
1917-1939. Full Calf. Very Good. With colorful, insouciant whimsical vignettes, and larger, watercolors throughout. We count 55 separate illustrations, on 50 pages with content. But one could dicker over whether particular illustrations are one or two, given how sometimes they overlap or are arranged with a collage-like sensibility. Let's just say there are illustrations, sometimes two or more, on most pages with text. The artwork was almost certainly done by a single hand, and thus we presume it was Olga Kanicky's. Olga was married to Leopold Karnicky-Cachrov, who was a mining engineer. They were also obviously rather affluent, with a busy social calendar that included masques and the like. While this is actually called a guestbook on the third numbered page, its purpose would appear to have evolved somewhat, and Olga thus also chronicled the guests at various parties, some of which seem not to have been at her home, or hosted by her or her husband. Arand for virtually all of these…

Description:
Paris: H. Piazza. Presse de Jacoub, Aulard & Cie., 1919. First Limited Edition . Full Morocco, with slipcase. Very Good . No. 520 of 1,500. 4to, 12 by 9 inches, 31 by 24 cm. ix, 125, [1] pp. With 24 tipped-in color plates, and additional black and white drawings interspersed through text. Rubbing to the joints, and a few rubbed/raw spots on spine, which is also slightly darkened. Original wraps bound in, with a short closed tear to bottom edge of this front cover. One tissue guard had an ugly tape repair which left a stain on the tissue guard, the neighboring text page and a plate. A few creases to the tissue guards, which in addition to their protective function, carried caption text. Typical wear to slipcase, which has marbled pastedowns on all sides. This remains solid and attractive. Within the book, minor occasional soiling (beside the tape shadow spoken of already), but overall, a clean, beautiful copy.

Description:
1904. Cloth. Very Good. Each album is oblong, 14 by 28 cm and 14.5 by 25 cm. 12 leaves each. Containing 48 and 34 photos, respectively, each photo, 10 by 8 cm, mounted in windows. Sporting scenes, which are overall the most interesting in in the album, show hunting, on elephant and horseback, with a massive army of beaters, for tigers; horse racing -- the 1904 Calcutta Paperchase -- and golf. The hunting scenes include Viceroy Curzon and his staff. Women are decked in European clothing that doesn't necessarily make full concessions to the Indian climate. We see the colonists relaxing -- in one photo, they are enjoying a picnic; in another, they are lounging on a flat boat. Among the more formal occasions are a parade with bagpipes. Portraits include a photo of Keighley himself -- the first photo in one of the albums, and the Maharaja of Cooch Behar. The photos generally have handwritten captions in pencil, which enables us to identify the people and events. Albums are standard Kodak cloth albums, with…

Description:
Edison, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Stewart Tabori & Chang, 1989. Hardcover. Fine. Book. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 456 pp., beautifully illustrated with photographs of Greek Revival mansions, interiors, public buildings. Roger Kennedy was the head of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and author of several lavish books on architecture. This is perhaps his most magnificent production, and it has become one of the standard references on the style, which had not received a good treatment for several decades. Greek Revival is far more than just another architectural style; it expressed the hopes and pretensions of the early Republic, and it is that sentimental or philosophical attachment which makes the study of it so much richer than merely the admiration of old buildings.

Ware, Massachusetts (Springfield) and New Haven, Connecticut, 1881-1888. Quarter modern calf. Pebbled cloth boards. . Good. Oblong, 11 by 20 cm. 36 leaves, all portraits, 117 in all, and two still lifes, on rectos. Some portraits are captioned with names and dated, and a few leaves are also signed, with location given. The portraits are clearly by an amateur, or a developing, hand, yet even the most awkwardly executed of these portraits, one can sense, imparts a rather credible likeness of the subject, with a few of the portraits undeniably life-like. All of the portraits render their subjects with serious, rather grim expressions. We can't say whether this reflects a limitation by the artist or was deliberate, as sober expressions were the norm back then. Whether intentionally or not, Kennedy would appear to capture a cross-section of middle class or upper middle class New Englanders of the day, and we regard this sketchbook as a rather special specimen of late nineteenth century…
