London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1888. Finely bound example of Macaulay's classic work. Octavo, bound in full morocco with gilt titles to the spine, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, decorated with a concealed fore-edge painting of a view of ancient Rome. In very good condition. Bookplate and ownership inscription. The term 'fore-edge painting' can refer to any painted decoration on the fore-edges of the leaves of a book, such as was not uncommon in the 15th and early 16th centuries, particularly in Italy. The term is most commonly used, however, for an English technique quite widely practiced in the second half of the 17th century in London and Edinburgh, and popularized in the 18th century by John Brindley and, in particular, Edwards of Halifax, whereby the fore-edge of the book, very slightly fanned out and then held fast, is decorated with painted views, or conversation pieces. The edges are then squared up and gilded in the ordinary way, so that… Read More

Description:
Soixante-Dix_Sept Bibliophiles. Soixante-Dix-Sept signed limited edition of Machiavelli's classic comedy, The Mandrake. Folio, loose leaves as issued, illustrated with 12 original lithographs by Claude Durrens, additional suite of lithographs in rear. One of only 77 copies signed by the artist on the colophon. In very good condition. housed in the original one quarter morocco and chemise slip case. Although The Mandrake was first published in 1524 and first performed in the carnival season of 1526, Machiavelli likely wrote the five-act comedy in 1518 as a distraction from his bitterness at having been excluded from the diplomatic and political life of Florence following the 1512 reversion to Medici rule. Both contemporary and modern scholars read the play as an overt critique of the House of Medici; however, Machiavelli set the action in 1504 during the period of the Florentine Republic in order to express his frustrations without fear of censure from patrons already ill-disposed towards him and his writing.

London: Printed by T. C. [Thomas Creede] for W. P. [William Ponsonby], 1595. Rare first edition in English of this classic work. In near fine condition with some light browning and wear, title trimmed and laid down. Translated by Thomas Bedingfeld. First editions are scarce, especially in this condition. Florentine Histories is a historical account by Italian Renaissance political philosopher and writer Niccolo Machiavelli. After the crisis of 1513, with arrests for conspiracy, torture and after being sentenced to house arrest, Machiavelli's relationship with the Medici family passively began to mend itself. If the dedication of Il Principe (1513) to Lorenzo II de' Medici had not any effect, part of the then dominant faction of the Florence was not against him, and instead granted him an appointment. In his letter he deplores of his idle state, offering his precious political… Read More
