Description:
In May 1820, the author, a seasoned sailor, set out on a sealing voyage aboard the Princess of Wales. The journey included stops at Madeira, the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde Islands, and the Crozet Islands, where the vessel ultimately met its demise. The survivors managed to endure by subsisting on sea elephants, penguins, and seabirds until they were rescued by the American ship Philo. They requested to be left on St. Paul Island, where they remained for three months before being picked up and taken to Tasmania. This tale of shipwreck gained popularity and was published in multiple editions. Contains 2 plates and a frontispiece where the author is depicted as a contemporary Robinson Crusoe, clad in sealskin attire, carrying a brace of birds, surrounded by king penguins, with a towering ice mountain in the background. Fair Condition. Original brown cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. 3 engraved plates. Pen inscription to front pastedown. Newspaper clippings tipped in front front pastedown to…

Description:
This is the second edition of William Morris' fantasy novel, 'The House of the Wolfings'. Despite the printing error on the copyright page stating 'First Edition, December, 1888' This is a second edition because of the 1890 date on the title page and the ads to the rear of the book being dated 'November 1890'. Hugely influential to J. R. R. Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' series, Tolkien even borrowed the name 'Mirkwood' from Morris' "House of the Wolfings". Morris's novel stands out as perhaps the first modern fantasy work to blend an imaginary world with supernatural elements. The House of the Wolfings offers a romantically reconstructed portrayal of the lives of the Germanic Gothic tribes, written in an archaic style and rich with poetry. Morris blends his idealistic perspectives with the contemporary understanding of the tribes' customs and language. He depicts them as simple, hardworking people who are driven to heroic action to defend their families and freedom against the onslaught of imperial…
