The definite, large, decorative and important map of the Philippines, which belongs into any serious collection of Philippine Maps. Executed by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, one of the foremost French Cartographers/Hydrographers at the time, he however added the non-existing, mystical island of San Juan, East of Mindanao, "improving" on what was probably the largest Philippine map done in the 18th century.This copy is another variant, from the desirable thick paper edition: 1) with medallion of the Dépôt de la Marine. 2) with text of "Prix, trente Sols" on lower left. This magnificent plate on fine chain-linked, watermarked paper, features a delicate yellow border, which many believe led to the development of French matting. Buffon (1707-1788) was the preeminent scientist and mathematician of the late 18th century. He directed the Jardin des Plantes botanical garden in Paris, which still exists today. His most outstanding achievement came in the field of natural history with the publication of the monumental Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière (1749-1788) in 36 vols, for which Martinet created all the bird illustrations. 'Francois Nicolas Martinet (1725-1804) was the French court engraver and the foremost bird artist of his day, who also created work for Marmontel, Voltaire, and Philidor. The other chapters describe The British Empire in the Far East and the French, Russian, Spanish, and presence there, along with China, Korea, Japan, Siam and Malaya. COLLECTOR'S ITEM.
