Very Good. 5 x 8 inches, 8vo. 4 + ix + [3] + 429 + [1] pages, engraved frontispiece pasted to front cover and 24 full page engravings and 1 oversized fold out engraving. Occasional foxing. Closed tear to title and following page. Bound in full brown calf with wear and old repairs to spine and hinges and spotting to boards perhaps due to the effects of mottling during binding. Small loss to head and tail of spine, two compartments and corners, part of red spine label remains, spine with gilt banding and five raised bands. ESTCT76497 A very good copy of this standard guide to the celebratory services of the Church of England for more than a century. "Though it does not aim at originality or eloquence, the skillfulness of the execution and the sincerity of purpose gave it unrivaled popularity as a popular manual of Anglican theology." DNB. Letter neatly folded in thirds with pencil notes on verso. Envelope slightly charred at edge. Enclosed schedule card lightly yellowed but clean. Provenance: Personal library of Samuel Hart. An interesting early railroad notice and schedule with a notable provenance and associated items. Also an interesting insight into the affairs of Samuel Hart (1845-1917), who was the Secretary of the House of [Episcopal] Bishops, dean of the Berkeley Divinity School, the (un)official middle way seminary of the Episcopal Church at Middletown, Connecticut, and Custodian of the Standard Book of Common Prayer.
