Description:
New York: The Ecco Press, 2000. With fresh insights into the heart of a celebrity culture hypnotized by its own myths, Blonde is a sweeping novel about the elusive magic of a woman, the lasting legacy of a star, and the heartbreak behind the creation of the most evocative icon of the twentieth century. Blonde was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize (2001) and the National Book Award (2000). Oates noted that it is one of the two books (along with 1969's Them) for which she thinks she will be remembered and a film adaptation has been under discussion, to be written and directed by Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik and starring Jessica Chastain as Marilyn Monroe.

Description:
2009. Barack Obama made history when he was inaugurated on January 20, 2009, becoming the first African-American president in the history of the United States. The first inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States took place on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at the West Front of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. The 56th inauguration, which set a record attendance for any event held in the city, marked the commencement of the first term of Barack Obama as president and Joe Biden as vice president. Based on combined attendance numbers, television viewership, and Internet traffic, it was one of the most-observed events ever by the global audience. In addition to a larger than usual celebrity attendance, the Presidential Inaugural Committee increased its outreach to ordinary citizens to encourage greater participation in inaugural events compared with participation in recent past inaugurations. For the first time, the committee opened the entire length of the National… Read More

Description:
New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1986. Irish novelist Edna O'Brien's first novel, The Country Girls (1960), is often credited with breaking silence on sexual matters and social issues during a repressive period in Ireland following the Second World War and was adapted into a 1983 film. It was followed by two sequels The Lonely Girl (1962), and Girls in Their Married Bliss (1964). The trilogy was re-released in 1986 in a single volume with a revised ending to Girls in Their Married Bliss and addition of an epilogue. All three novels were banned by the Irish censorship board and faced significant public disdain in Ireland. O'Brien won the Kingsley Amis Award in 1962 for The Country Girls.

Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Dr. J.D. Cummins, (Joe) from his old ___ Sean O'Casey With undiminished affection London Jan. 1935." Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. A committed socialist, dramatist Sean O'Casey was the first Irish playwright to write about the Dublin working classes. O'Casey's first accepted play, The Shadow of a Gunman, was performed at the Abbey Theatre in 1923. This was the beginning of a relationship that was to be fruitful for both theatre and dramatist but which ended in some bitterness. Windfalls contains a collection of verses and three short stories written in an effort to release some of the bitterness that swept into O'Casey when the Abbey Theatre rejected his 1927 four-act Expressionist play about the First World War, The Silver Tassie.
