Description:
NY: William Morrow & Company, 1971. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Inscribed on the title page in blue ink: "For Louise D-- [sp?], To whom, with her husband, I am glad to say that my books owe much. With all good wishes, Charlton Ogburn, July 1985." An apparent association copy, possibly a good one as suggested by the inscription, but unfortunately we can't make out the last name of the recipient. Uncommon signed in any case. Ogburn won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1967 for The Winter Beach, his tour of the Atlantic Shore, and here he travels in the same "little camping bus" across the country to survey its landscape and natural history in the tradition of Roger Tory Peterson and James Fisher's Wild America (1953). Green paper boards, blue cloth spine, topographical map endpapers, blue topstain. A very good book on account of a bump and resulting slight interior tear to upper front board near spine; in a very good jacket with a short tear in that same…

William Morrow & Co, 1966. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Inscribed in the year of publication on the half title: "For William Trueheart, a fellow veteran, with the best of wishes, Charlton Ogburn, 1966." This book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing. William Trueheart is probably the Trueheart who was shortly after the Ambassador to Nigeria and later a diplomat in Vietnam. A near fine book with some sunning to lower boards and a line of blue ink to outer text block. In a very-good-plus jacket with general wear to edges and to the folds of spine, as well as some sunning to edges, though only noticeable on white flaps. Presents great under mylar. Uncommon signed.

Description:
NY: William Morrow, 1975. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/Near fine. An association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the title page: "For Guzz--Last of the big spenders--with every good wish from a grateful beneficiary--Charlton, May 1975." Uncommon signed. Walter Guzzardi, Jr. was a journalist and editor, including for Fortune magazine (perhaps part of the allusion in the inscription), and the author fo several books. Probably he worked with Ogburn as an editor and "spent" in that way, too. Charlton Ogburn won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1967 for The Winter Beach, his tour of the Atlantic Shore. Later he moved to Virginia and this book was the result. Front flap blurb by Annie Dillard (the year she won the Pulitzer for Pilgrim at Tinker Creek): "These are the mountains I thought I knew: Charlton Ogburn knows them better. I loved The Winter Beach; The Southern Appalachians impresses me still more, because it treats my own turf so well." Rear…

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Dear George Hanson, Now that you have a Listening Point of your own, I know your understanding of mine will be far deeper than with most others. Warmest regards, Sigurd F Olson." An inscription of uncommon warmth and extent. George Hanson was a college librarian and book collector in Chicago, with a special passion for Iceland, and a copy of his obituary is laid in. Illustrated by Frances Lee Jacques. From the jacket: "Listening Point tells of what I have seen and heard on a bare glaciated spit of rock in the Quetico-Superior country. . . . [It] is dedicated to rekindling that flame by capturing this almost forgotten sense of wonder, and learning from rocks and trees and all the life that surrounds them truths that can encompass all." NY: Knopf, 1963. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. Tenth printing, 1974. A nice association copy, inscribed to Minnesota lawyer Richard Flint who played a pivotal role in the protection of the state's environment and wilderness: "For Dick Flint, The gathering of runes is of great importance and infinitely rewarding for each one found is a milestone in your life. Good luck in your search. Sincerely, Sigurd F Olson, 7/22/76." Illustrated by renown naturalist-illustrator Bob Hines (known for his collaborations with Rachel Carson). Taped to the front pastedown is a transcription of the inscription by Flint's wife on her personal stationary (indeed, Olson's gorgeous handwriting can be hard to read, but studying it is part of the pleasure). Flint was a young lawyer in Minneapolis who had previously worked as a canoe guide in the Boundary Waters.
