Description:
Paris: Chez Ferdinand Bastien, 1798. First edition illustrated, three volumes, octavos. In good condition, all edges gilt, tooling to the spine, expertly rebacked. All plates present. An attractive set. One of the great writers of world literature, François Rabelais is considered among the creators of modern European writing (Bahtin, 1984). His most renowned work is Gargantua and Pantagruel, and its satire and scatalogical humor of this time of censorship and increasing religious oppression have won Rabelais consideration as "....the greatest writer in the French language" (Le Clézio, 2008). The French novelist Honoré de Balzac was directly inspired by Rabelais to write his Les Cent Contes Drolatiques, and he quotes Rabelais lavishly in his La Comédie humaine (Brix, 2005).

Description:
London: William Heinemann, n.d. [1913]. "So far as titles go (but not so far as artwork goes) we move into a different key with Mother Goose, a book constructed in 1913 from a series of plates and line drawings which had appeared and would reappear in St Nicholas between 1912 and 1914. The poems were chosen by Rackham, presumably in terms of the themes and subjects he wished to illustrate: this would account for the consistently good quality of the many plates and of the numerous line drawings." Description:
London: Robert White, 1677. Early printing of this classic work. Folio, bound in full calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, morocco spine label, additional engraved title (dated 1676), engraved frontispiece and 8 double-page maps and plans. In very good condition. The success of Raleigh’s History can perhaps be explained by the very fact that it is not a work of history in the academic sense but a political tract of immediate applicability. Its author embodied all the glories of the reign of Elizabeth I, which at the time of publication had already begun to be transfigured into a golden age Raleigh can be taken as the epitome of the Elizabethan idea of courtier and politician, sailor and explorer, writer and poet He was among the first Englishmen to envisage clearly that the Americas should be the principal goal of English overseas expansion The reversal of Elizabeth’s policy by James I encompassed Raleigh’s ruin He finally fell a victim to James’s pro-Spanish inclinations,… Read More

Description:
New York and Cleveland: The World Publishing Company, 1968. First edition of this play by Ayn Rand. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed and dated in the year of publication by Ayn Rand on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Uncommon signed. Night of January 16th is a theatrical play by Ayn Rand, inspired by the death of the "Match King", Ivar Kreuger. Set in a courtroom during a murder trial, an unusual feature of the play is that members of the audience are chosen to play the jury. The court hears the case of Karen Andre, a former secretary and lover of businessman Bjorn Faulkner, of whose murder she is accused. The play does not directly portray the events leading to Faulkner's death; instead the jury must rely on character testimony to decide whether Andre is guilty. The play's ending depends on the verdict. Rand's intention was to dramatize a conflict between individualism and conformity, with the jury's verdict revealing… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis and New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1962. Although Rand was a previously published novelist and had a successful Broadway play, she faced difficulty in finding a publisher she thought right for The Fountainhead. She let Macmillian Publishing go when they rejected her demand for better publicity (Branden, 1986), and when her agent criticized the novel, she fired him and handled submissions herself (Burns, 2009). After sifting through eleven more publishers, Rand finally released The Fountainhead with Bobbs-Merrill Company in 1943. The reception was instant, and The Fountainhead became a bestseller in two years. The protagonist, Howard Roark, whose character was thought to be inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, is a young architect fighting against convention. Cited by numerous architects as an inspiration, Ayn Rand said the theme of the book was "individualism versus collectivism, not within politics but within a man's soul." Rand chose architecture as the analogy of her heady… Read More
