Description:
London: William Heinemann Ltd,, 1926. Signed, with an astronomical correction to the text First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the title page, one of 1,000 copies printed. The author has also, in the same ink, corrected an astronomical error in the text on p. 97, the line "four times the seasons changed, twelve times the moon" amended to "thirteen the moon". Sackville-West's poem is structured into the four seasons and was "an ambitious attempt to write a modern version of Virgil's Georgics by celebrating the annual round of the Kentish farming year" (ODNB). This poem, dedicated to Sackville-West's lover Dorothy Wellesley (1889-1956), was a critical and commercial success. In 1927 it was chosen for the Hawthornden Prize which was presented by John Drinkwater in the Aeolian Hall, London. Drinkwater had previously reviewed the poem in The Observer and noted "it contains some of the loveliest verse written in this century". Octavo. Original brown cloth, printed paper label to spine,… Read More

Description:
[c.1924]. Inscribed to an admiring fellow poet A highly appealing keepsake that features William Strang's famous portrait of Vita, "Lady with a Red Hat" (1918), inscribed on the mount, "For Miss Queenie Scott, V. Sackville West, gratefully acknowledging her kind letter, and hoping she has found occasion to smile over 'Seducers in Ecuador'". The "envelope", when opened out, encourages display, suggesting the genial response of a celebrated writer to an enthusiastic admirer. This is a pleasing association, inscribed to fellow writer Olive Hopper (1881-1924), who published under the pseudonym Queenie Scott-Hopper. Her "vaguely mystical verse containing angels and visions" (Platt, p. 111) was often anthologised for children during her lifetime, and her poetry was described as "romantic... simple... entirely undisturbing" (ibid). An ambitious poet, short-story writer, novelist, and librettist, Scott-Hopper's 1919 volume of children's verse, Pull the Bobbin!, was illustrated by Winifred M. Ackroyd, and in… Read More

Description:
15 March 1945. It is very gratifying to know that you have read it more than once A fine typed letter signed from Vita Sackville-West to a reader, Miss Richardson, thanking her for her "nice letter about my book on the Women's Land Army. It is very gratifying to know that you have read it more than once and I expect that you can now give your mother a great deal of information about the Land Army which perhaps she did not already know. I am sending you a photograph. I am afraid it is only the photograph of a painting but it is the only thing that I have got", together with the signed image she is referring to. It is a reproduction of William Strang's painting "Lady with a Red Hat", signed under the image. The Women's Land Army, published in 1944, was written by Sackville-West to raise the profile of the contribution of the Women's Land Army to the war effort, and particularly to feeding the country. This comprehensive survey of the WLA and its members throughout the UK describes their history, duties… Read More

London: The Dropmore Press,, 1947. By the little gift of poetry and music do the nursery rhymes abide in our hearts First edition, first impression, number 54 of 550 copies on handmade paper. This is Sackville-West's examination into what lies behind some of the old English nursery rhymes and proposing that many of them are far from nonsense, but insights into English history. A review in the Manchester Guardian on 28 October 1947 stated that "Miss Sackville-West's inquiry is often conjectural but always entertaining, and she knows the magic that sometimes brings the nonsense of the nursery song near to pure poetry" (p. 3). Quarto. Original half vellum by Evans, orange cloth sides, spine lettered in gilt, front cover with vignette in gilt, fore and lower edges untrimmed. With dust jacket and original cardboard sleeve. London: Michael Joseph,, 1953. First edition, first impression, presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "With love from V. and R. January 1953". The "R" stands for "Rollo", the author's German shepherd dog, featured in the novel as "Svend" and portrayed on the frontispiece. This is a very good copy of Sackville-West's penultimate novel. "The action of the story covers an Easter weekend at Anstey, the beautiful country house of Sir Water Mortibois - a weekend which brings together a number of people who should have been close to each other... and the Alsatian, Svend, the one creature whom Walter Mortibois really loves" (front flap blurb). Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, yellow coated endpapers. With dust jacket. Frontispiece portrait of a German shepherd dog. London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd,, 1923. First edition, first impression, number 10 of 50 copies signed by the author. Although a printed statement notes that the edition is limited to 750 copies, an errata slip is tipped in stating "This edition is limited to 750 copies, of which 50 are signed by the author". The dust jacket price has been changed by hand. The poet and children's author Lady Margaret Sackville (1881-1963) was a second cousin to Vita Sackville-West. She began writing poems at an early age and at sixteen became a protégé of Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, publishing her first collection, Floral Symphony, in 1900. She was made the first president of the Poetry Society in 1912. She had a 15 year love affair with Ramsay MacDonald during and after the First World War. Octavo. London: Michael Joseph,, 1950. The dedication copy, inscribed to her lover First trade edition, first impression, the dedication copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication page, "for Anna, her private copy, with the author's love. Christmas 1950", with the printed dedication struck through. This copy was bound for presentation by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The recipient, Anna "Mac" Macmillan (d.1962), became Vita's secretary at Sissinghurst in 1936, and her lover in 1938. Their affair began in autumn, when war with Germany seemed inevitable: "the household was issued with gas masks, and a trench dug in the orchard... Vita's response to the tension had been to allow Mac, her Scottish Presbyterian secretary, to fall in love with her" (Glendinning, p. 295). Macmillan left Sissinghurst during the war to become a nurse with the Queen Alexandra Nursing Service; Sackville-West wrote to her almost every day until her return in 1945, and their affair continued intermittently until 1953, when Sackville-West… Read More

London: Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press,, 1937. Pepita, can I re-create you? Come to me First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the front free endpaper, of this biography of her mother, Lady Sackville, and grandmother, Josefa de la Oliva, a Romani Spanish dancer who performed under the stage name Pepita. The work relates the love affair of the second Baron Sackville and Pepita. It is "a memorable evocation of her mother and grandmother in which [Sackville-West] tried to come to terms with the most unsettling and uncomfortable aspects of her early life and her dual nationality" (ODNB), seeing "the Spanish side of her nature as passionate and perverse and the English side of her nature as caring and controlled" (Orlando). Description:
London: The Hogarth Press,, 1928. First edition, first impression, of the author's Persian travelogue. This copy has an appealing provenance, from the library of Michael Ernest Sadler, educational pioneer and historian, with his University College, Oxford bookplate. His son, the publisher and author Michael Thomas Sadleir, was a friend and correspondent of Sackville-West, and her husband's publisher at Constable. Michael Thomas Sadleir (formerly Sadler, 1888-1957) was novelist, book collector and bibliographer. He was appointed chairman at Constable & Co. in 1954. In 1919, Sadleir and Sackville-West met in Paris and made plans to start a literary Magazine, titled "The Critic"; she was to run the English section, and Sadleir the European. The project was never realised. Sadleir's father was also a keen collector, although chiefly of art and art books; a promoter of modern art in Great Britain, he was one of the first British collectors to acquire works by Paul Cézanne and Wassily Kandinsky. Description:
London: Leonard and Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press, , 1924. Very pretty, rather like a ladybird First edition, first impression, of the first book by Vita Sackville-West published by Woolf at the Hogarth Press. Published in a run of 1,500 copies, it is rarely found in the jacket and in such good condition. The pair had first met in December 1922, and quickly became confidants and friends. Seducers in Ecuador followed on 30 October 1924, with a dedication to Woolf, and the two women began an affair the next year. Woolf praised Sackville-West's novel as "the sort of thing I should like to write myself", and in a letter to the author described how much she liked "its texture - the sense of all the fine things you have dropped in to it, so that it is full of beauty in itself when nothing is happening... I am very glad that we are going to publish it, and extremely proud and indeed touched, with my childlike dazzled affection for you, that you should dedicate it to me" (15 September 1924). London: William Heinemann Ltd,, 1926. A rare special issue copy, with excellent provenance First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the title page and presented to her mother, Lady Sackville, inherited by Sackville-West in 1936, and thereafter presented to the photographer Gisèle Freund, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Gisèlle Freund from V. Sackville-West. Sissinghurst, July 4. 1949". This copy is from a special issue, unrecorded by the bibliographers, reserved for Sackville-West for presentation. Though it shares many similarities with the trade issue, it is embellished with four woodcuts designed for the signed limited issue, each signed by the artist, George Plank (1883-1965), and in each case the price has been die-cut from the jacket spine. The front flap of the present copy is inscribed by Lady Sackville, who notes, next to Plank's credit for the jacket design, that "the woodcuts of the 4 seasons are also by him. The fine woodcut of the wrapper is generally stuck… Read More
