Stunning early view of the colony with numerous boats in the harbor and people in the foreground, from the 'Narrative of the expedition of an American squadron to the China Seas and Japan : performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the command of Commodore M.C. Perry, United States Navy, by order of the Government of the United States'; a printed history, in 3 volumes, of the Perry Expedition, written by Francis L. Hawks, under the supervision of Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858), and using the written materials compiled by Perry & his colleagues on the expedition. The series was first presented as a report to the United States Senate, then published commercially in New York in 1856.

208pp with index, hardbound, half-calf marbled board cover, EXTREMELY RARE. Pardo de Tavera already states in 1903 "obra que no es facil hallar hoy dia". The folding map "Islas Filipinas. Division territorial moderna 1879. por Manuel Scheidnagel" is almost impossible to find as attached, as normally removed. Reference: Pardo de Tavera: BF # 2605; Phillips # 266 (map). Condition: front and back cover edge chipping, age-toned pages, otherwise very good condition.
