Description:
NY: Putnam, 1887. First. Hard Cover. VG./None. The author served the 11th NY Battery. He was just 16 when he enlisted in 1863. Mistakenly, he was first confined with misfit bounty jumpers and captured deserters. They drew little sympathy from the rest of the army as evidenced by the shooting of several before the motley crew was shipped out to the field. Wilkeson fought at The Wilderness and then at Petersburg. Nevins I-178: "...charming and refreshing...wit and sarcasm... Dornbusch I-NY-58. There is an interesting chapter titled, "How Men Die in Battle" that is full of personal observations. THIS COPY WAS OBVIOUSLY OWNED ONCE BY A UNION VETERAN WHO SHARED THE SAME EXPERIENCES AS THE AUTHOR. THERE ARE A FEW BRIEF PENCIL ANNOTATIONS AND A NOTE CLIPPED ONTO A PAGE IN THE TEXT. THIS MAN HAD A FASCINATION ABOUT GENERAL OFFICERS. PART OF THE NOTE DEALS WITH THE WOUNDING OF UNION GENERALS.THIS OWNER IS NOT IDENTIFIED. Overall the book a very interesting read.

But cased in the original binding, but pages intact and perfectly serviceable./None.. A really rare Ohio unit history. Written in 1865 when memories were fresh. The 7th entered the War early and served first in what was to become West Virginia. They moved to the Valley where they suffered at Cedar Mountain and during other engagements. It joined the Army of the Potomac through Gettysburg when it transferred to the West. It arrived there in time for Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. It fought with Sherman through Resaca when its enlistment expired. The 7th had a total of 1800 members and lost 184 KIA making it a Fox's Fighting 300 unit. There are biological sketches on nearly all the regiment's officers.

But somehow (political influence?) he stayed on to command the Ninth Corps. He left at least things for history - his sideburns and the name of the bridge across Antietam Creek. Eight maps and eight illustrations all present. The plate and portraits are as nice as I have seen. Nevins I-181.

Description:
Baltimore: Day Printing, 1932. First. Hard Cover. VG+/None. Super narrative about the Battle of Monocacy which is an 1864 engagement that has not been written about to much. However, his Union bias and conclusions may be questionable. The battle "...was more decisive than Antietam, Shiloh or Gettysburg." Well, I'm not sure about that!!" Nonetheless, a very detailed and well organized presentation with excellent research backing his tale. A not very common book.
