(7.2 x 4.9 inches). viii, 86pp. Illustrated with frontis and 14 smaller engraved and photo illustrations in the text, a mixture of views, portraits and plans. Original publishers brown paper wraps with dark green lettering and design to front cover. The covers have one small crease to the front and are toned and marked but still very good, while internally the pages are very clean and fresh.

Original brown cloth blocked in metallic blue in a geometric pattern to the spines and front boards. The spines are lettered in gilt. Floral patterned endpapers. Spines rolled a little, some light spotting to endpapers and title pages but generally a clean, tight and bright copy. Overall a better than very good set. Alexander Pollock Watt (1838–1914) was the first successful British literary agent. His agency, started in 1875, is still active today and is, in fact, the longest-established literary agency in the world. He acted as Besant's agent, and also his literary executor.

Watt with the Author's kindest wishes. 6th June 1891". 12 mono full page plates by Green, each with a tissue guard. Original dark green cloth blocked with elaborate blind decoration, spines lettered in gilt, floral patterned endpapers. Cloth very slightly rubbed at extremities and a few thin white streaks to the front board of volume one and some light foxing to the decorative endpapers, otherwise clean, tight and bright throughout. G. Bell & Sons. Ltd. London. 1911. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.6 x 5.5 inches). x, 278pp, 2 (advert leaf). Red and black decorative title page, portrait of William Morris, from a photo by Emery Walker, and 54 mono illustrations, including some drawings by Crane. Publishers blue cloth with decoration and lettering in white to both boards and spine. Small dent to the bottom of the rear board. Some minor foxing to the fore edges but this is a lovely clean and unread copy, with some page gatherings still unopened. In the rare original fawn paper dustwrapper which reproduces the designs and lettering on the book in red. Publishers adverts on the Inner flaps. Some darkening to the spine and chipping to the edges but overall a very good example and rare thus.

William Heinemann. London.,1905. EARLY RACKHAM EDITION. Second impression, the same format as the First edition, published two months earlier. 4to.(10.1 x 7.7 inches). Colour frontis and fifty colour plates, mounted onto thicker paper and with a printed tissue guard. Publishers dark green cloth with gilt lettering to front board and spine. Illustration of Rip Van Winkle stamped in gilt to front board. Lower hinge split to the middle of spine. Apart from some foxing to the first four text pages this is a clean copy internally. A near very good copy of this beautiful book. The first of the famous tipped in colour plate gift books that made Rackham a household name.:.

Compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Inner boards with double gilt rule. Board edges piped in gilt. All edges gilt. Neat previous owners inscription to front free endpaper. A very good tight copy in a fine mid twentieth century binding.:

Stipple engraved, hand coloured title page and seven full page, hand coloured plates, plus full page engraved speech from As You Like it, titled The ages of Man, featuring one of Shakespeare's most enduring and often quoted lines - All the world's a stage, and all the men and women meerly players- each printed by R. Fenner. The plates are engraved by William Bromley after Stothards drawings. . Fine recent binding of quarter red straight grained morocco, the spine, ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. Red morocco tips to corners of boards. Some offsetting from the Illustrations onto the text pages and some staining to the margins only on 5 pages but overall a very good attractive copy of this scarce and beautiful work.

Early leather binding of half dark blue morocco. Spine, which has been re-laid, ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Double gilt ruled lines on the morocco edges bordering blue cloth panels on the boards. Marbled endpapers with a strip of plain paper to both inner hinges where the book has been professionally re-cased. Top edge gilt. Some rubbing to the edges of the binding. A beautifully produced edition in the arts and crafts style of the period, in a skilfully repaired but very good quality and still attractive early leather binding.

(8.6 x 5.5 inches). iii-xxvii, 523pp. Bound without half title but otherwise complete, with 13 engraved plates, all but two folding. A clean copy finely bound in recent half burgundy morocco leather. Spine with five raised bands, the compartments decorated, ruled and lettered in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. A very good copy of this popular work.

Swan Sonnenschein & Co. London. 1888. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (8.7 x 5.9 inches). 8 full page mono plates. A couple of the plates have small ink marks to the margins, not affecting the image at all. Overall a veyr good copy in publishers blue cloth with black and gilt illustration to the front board in between gilt lettering and black double ruled lines at the top and bottom. Spine illustrated and lettered in gilt. Yellow endpapers. Cloth is a bit rubbed and the spine is darkened, although the gilt still very visible. Overall a very good copy of this interesting book. Purports to be the reminiscences, noted down by the author, of an old negro at Apia, the first "white man", i.e. British subject, established in the group.

Fully illustrated throughout with 16 tipped in colour plates, pictorial title page, plus 25 full page and 100 smaller line drawings. A hint of browning to the blank endpapers but generally a very clean and bright copy in the original publishers yellow cloth binding with illustration to the front board in red and black. The spine and front board are lettered in black. A little darkening to spine but overall a better than very good copy of this beautiful book. --- Originally published by Constable and Co in 1912, this is the first Hodder and Stoughton edition and it contains all of the illustrations from the earlier edition. (11.8 x 8.3 inches). 8pp of text in German. 173 full page mono plates illustrating people playing musical instruments through the ages, most of them women. Neat presentaion inscription on the front free endpaper presenting the book to William Bentley, from the members of teaching staff of the Birmingham and Midland institute of Music, dated 16th July 1931. William Bentley (1862-1935) was honorary librarian and a Committee member at the School. In an attractive craft binding of full mid brown morocco. Spine with five raised bands. The compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Triple blind ruled borders to boards with gilt corner dots. Circular blind tooled centre panels with a gilt harp and birds to the front board and the initials W B and floral devices to the rear. Board edges and turn-ins ruled in blind. Some rubbing to the extremities but overall a very good and attractive binding. The binding is unsigned.

Some light foxing to a few pages and previous owner neat printed bookplate on the blank pastedown endpaper otherwise clean and bright throughout. Bound in attractive amateur full tan morocco Arts and crafts style binding. Spine with five raised bands, compartments ruled, dotted and lettered in gilt. The boards with decorative gilt ruled line design and dots, and green leather onlaid floral corner pieces. The front board also has an extra ruled panel with the title lettered to the top. Inside of boards have gilt double ruled borders. Plain blue endpapers. All edges gilt. A little rubbing to the extremities and marks to the leather but overall an attractive early twentieth century amateur craft binding.

In the publishers original dark green cloth binding with gilt ruling and lettering to the spine. Boards with double blind ruled borders. Brown coated endpapers. Inner hinges cracked but holding firm. Some rubbing to the edges of the cloth binding but overall a very good copy indeed.

A very good set in contemporary full tree calf bindings. Spines ruled in gilt. Red title and circular number labels, gilt. The hinges are cracked and rubbed but all still holding. Top and bottom of spines with some minor loss and some rubbing but overall a good set.

Some foxing to the blank endpapers and to a lesser extent on the first and last couple of pages of text, otherwise clean throughout. Fine attractive early twentieth century binding of full dark green morocco, by Zaehnsdorf of London. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments decorated, ruled and lettered in gilt. Triple gilt ruled border on boards. Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales arms stamped in gilt to the front board and their prize label (dated 1907), signed by the President, Vice President and Secretary of the Institute, on the front paste down endpaper. Gilt inner dentelles. Dark green endpapers. All edges gilt. Spine faded to a mellow brown but overall a fine attractive binding.

A very good, uncut copy in the publishers brown morocco grained cloth with printed paper label to the spine. Several gatherings unopened. A little chipping to the label but overall a very good clean copy of this uncommon First UK edition. --------- Channing (1780-1842) initially held a common American belief about the inferiority of African people and slaves and felt that that once freed, they would need overseers. The overseers (largely former slave masters) were necessary because the slaves would lapse into laziness. Furthermore, he did not join the abolitionist movement because he did not agree with their way of conducting themselves, and he felt that voluntary associations limited a person's autonomy.
