He enlisted in the 1st Georgia Infantry in August 1861 as a Captain and was promoted to Major in November. He was listed as a prisoner of war in June of 1864 at Marietta, and released from a Union camp at Johnsons Island, Ohio, in June of 1865. In April 1868 Levy criticized in print the political views of a certain Dr. James Waring. Waring, apparently thin-skinned, demanded a duel. This important translation was written by William Yates, an English Baptist missionary and orientalist who spent many years in Calcutta, laboring on translations of the Bible into various languages including Hindustani and Bengali.
