1768. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Illustrated with a New and Accurate Map of Corsica. 8vo. 20th century marbled half-calf; spine with 5 raised bands. Glasgow, Printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis for Edward and Charles Dilly in the Poultry, London. (1768). First Edition. Pascal Paoli was a Corsican patriot, who in 1755 succeeded in liberating the island from Genoese oppression and was chosen president under a republican constitution. In 1769, however, his troops were defeated by the French, and fled to England. Boswell brought Paoli to London, introduced him to the circle of… Read More

Description:
First Edition. The first book by Frances Wright (later D'Arusmont). Wright began writing the play in Scotland, but did not publish it until she moved to the United States in 1818. In the Preface she comments on the friendly reception she has received in the U.S., as a young, unknown author, and how it would have been difficult for her to publish and have performed such a play in England. Wright's sentiments were with social reform and progressive movements, and she became an influential abolitionist and promoter of feminist causes.8vo. Modern green cloth, dark green morocco label on spine, gilt lettering. Philadelphia: Published by M. Carey and Son, 1819. First Edition. (American Bibliography 50175; Wegelin, Early American Plays, page 82; Hill, American Plays, 334). Text somewhat browned and foxed.

With a Report of the Executive Committee by Isabella B. Hooker, Chairman."Tracts of the Connecticut Woman suffrage Association. No. 2." The CWSA was founded by Isabella Beecher Hooker, sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Henry Ward Beecher. She states in her report: "Because this is a crisis, at which our nation is called to choose between moral life and death, I am bold to address women themselves and especially educated ladies. . .. It is a grievous fact, that men possessed of political power, and fully aware of things concerning which we fear to speak very plainly, have enacted in a course of many centuries just enough law against these horrors to salve their own consciences, but never have so enforced any enactment as to make the law a reality. . . I boldly say that History, and the voice of God sounding through its miserable… Read More
