Hodder and Stoughton. London. 1913. FIRST EDITION. 2 Large 8vo volumes. (10.2 x 8 inches). Illustrated with 2 maps, 8 colour plates and 260 illustrations from mono photographs by the Author. Some minor foxing to the blank reverse of the portrait frontis in volume one otherwise a bright and clean copy throughout. In the publishers dark blue cloth bindings with gilt lettering to the spines. Front panels with circular device in gilt, green, blue and silver with four illustrations alongside, all in gilt and within a shield border. In the rare original dustwrappers with dark blue lettering to spine and front panels with cut out holes on the front panels to show the circular emblem. Some very minor chipping to the edges of the wrapper for volume one, volume two's wrapper with a large thumb sized area of loss to the front panel and a little more chipping to the extremities. Overall a lovely tidy set of books kept in wonderful condition by the still very good original publishers dustwrappers.

Chapman and Hall. London. ND. 1870's. Volumes from the Household edition. 2 volumes bound in one. Large 8vo. (9.9 x 7.5 inches). Text in double column. Finely illustrated with Twenty Eight engravings, some full page, by Mahoney in Oliver Twist, Thirty four by Barnard in Sketches by Boz. Attractive early leather binding of half black calf. Spine with raised bands, each with gilt floral design. Compartments ruled in gilt and decorated with blind stamped chain borders and floral centre tool. Red and olive morocco labels, ruled and lettered in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. Tan endpapers. Some offsetting to both free endpapers, probably a reaction to the glue used in the paste-downs. All edges speckled. Some minor rubbing to extremities but overall this is a lovely copy in a fine Victorian binding.

Printed and Published by G. Ross. Edinburgh. - (No date). Circa 1814. Small 8vo. (3.9 x 2.5 inches). 48pp, including the first and last blanks which are pasted directly onto the inside leaves of the printed wrappers. Sewn text pages. Illustrated with a full page wood-engraved frontispiece of Captain Gulliver and 12 smaller woodcuts within the text. Original blue printed paper wrappers with upside-down double face illustration on lower cover. Neat ink title written on the front panel otherwise a fine copy of this scarce little edition, issued in Ross's Juvenile Library. A remarkable survivor. The work is undated but the British Library catalogue suggests a publication date of either 1814 or 1815, while the Bodleian Library estimates 1815.

A few spots of foxing to the fore edge otherwise a very good clean copy throughout, finely bound in recent half dark green morocco, raised bands, the compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. An attractively leather bound copy of this classic of American literature.

Some offsetting to the blank endpapers and first and last text pages. Contemporary full speckled calf, raised bands, red title labels, gilt. Double gilt ruled border on boards. Chipping to the top of spines on vols one and three otherwise an attractive set. Bookplate of William Roundell, University College, Oxford, in each volume. A collection of writings by various authors originally published in 140 parts between Nov. 7th 1752 and March 9th 1754.

A few small marks to just a handful of pages but generally this is a clean and bright copy throughout. Finely bound in recent full red morocco. Spine with five raised bands. Gilt ruling, lettering and decorations to compartments. Single gilt ruled border on boards. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Original publishers decorative front board and spine, which is rubbed and toned, have been bound in at the rear. Overall a very good attractive copy of the true first edition of this classic book. First published in England in order to secure a British copyright, the London edition precedes the American edition by about six months.

Victor Gollancz Ltd. London.,1968. FIRST EDITION. The first book in the Albert series. 20 lovely mono illustrations by Gordon. Previous owners name on front free endpaper, otherwise a very good bright copy in the original illustrated dustwrapper. Some minor rubbing to corners and spine ends of wrapper, which has been price-clipped, but overall a very good copy. Albert is a plump friendly bear who lives in the east end of London. During his adventures he encounters typical east end characters including a rag-and -bone man and a Pearly King.:

Attractive late nineteenth century binding of full white vellum. Spine with decorative gilt designs within double gilt ruled lines in compartments. Boards with triple gilt ruled borders to the very edges and elaborate dark brown morocco panels with highly decorative gilt tooling. A thin blue ink line inside and out of the brown panels. Four gilt corner pieces inside the middle panel. Red painted initials, with gilt borders, to the centre of the front panel. Board edges and turn-ins with decorative gilt rolls. A lovely clean copy finely bound, by Maurin, in contemporary full dark blue morocco. Spine with two raised bands, each with gilt wavy lines. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt, including the March Hare within a floral border. Double ruled gilt border on both boards with circular gilt illustration of Alice carrying the pig on the front board. Board edges with gilt ruled line. Gilt inner dentelles and double ruled borders. Multi coloured floral endpapers. Top edge gilt. Purple silk page marker. A bump to the top outer corner of the lower board, but otherwise a near fine copy in an attractive mid twentieth century fine binding.

Printed in Baskerville type on specially made Canterbury paper. A lovely clean copy finely bound, by Maurin, in contemporary full dark blue morocco. Spine with two raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt, including the March Hare within a floral border. Double ruled gilt border on both boards. Gilt inner dentelles and double ruled borders. Multi coloured floral endpapers. Top edge gilt. A fine copy in an attractive mid twentieth century fine binding.

Macmillan and Co. Limited. London. 1898. FIRST SIXPENNY EDITIONS. 8vo. (8.4 x 6 inches). Both volumes are the first printings of the Macmillan sixpenny series. Illustrated with forty two and fifty line illustrations, respectively, by John Tenniel. Publishers original red printed paper wraps. Page edges a bit chipped, as to be expected with the cheap paper used in production, and a little toned but overall these are very good internally. The front paper wraps for both volumes and only the rear for Alice are present. Both paper spines have perished. Ink stamp of previous owner to the front wrapper of each volume. While not the most attractive example, these two First printings of the sixpenny series are a rare survivor with their original fragile wraps and not in too bad condition for 1898 paperback Children's books.

The Macmillan Company. New York. 1910. TWO WORKS IN ONE VOLUME. Reprint of this single volume \edition, first published in this format in 1906. 8vo. (7.4 x 5.2 inches). Illustrated throughout with ninety-two (42 +50) fabulous line engravings by John Tenniel. Very good clean copy in fine leather binding of half dark green morocco for Charles E. Lauriat of Boston. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Boards covered in Mid green cloth on boards, with the gilt stamp of Brooks School, Andover, Massachusetts seal on the front board. Top edge gilt. Plain green endpapers. Minor fading to the spine but overall a very good copy in an attractive fine binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master Bookbinder.

Macmillan & Co. London. 1984. TWO VOLUMES. FACSIMILE EDITIONS. 8vo, (7.4 x 5.2 inches). Both volumes Illustrated throughout, with forty and fifty line engravings respectively, by John Tenniel. First printings of these facsimile editions of the original first editions of 1866 and 1872. Bound in publishers delux leather bindings of full deep red morocco, reproducing the original bindings. Triple gilt ruled borders on boards and circular illustrations to the centre of the panels. Spines with ruled lines to the top and bottom and lettering, all in gilt. Black coated endpapers. All edges gilt. Aside from a tiny rub to the top of the spine on Through the Looking glass these are in fine condition. Macmillan issued these two facsimile editions in 1984 in cloth bindings and these much scarcer leather versions.

A few minor marks to a handful of pages but overall a very good, clean copy in a fine leather binding. Recent full deep red morocco binding, gilt decorative borders on boards. Spines with raised bands, compartments decorated with gilt stamps of The Mad Hatter and playing cards. All edges gilt. Original publishers burgundy cloth boards, with gilt ruled lines and circular central illustrations, are bound into the back of each volume and show some rubbing and wear but are generally in fair condition. An attractive and early edition of this classic, published the year after the first published edition.
