This was changed to Balaoo before publication but after the adverts were typeset. Very good bright, tight copy with previous owners name written neatly in ink to front blank endpaper. Some light foxing to a few pages but still generally a nice fresh copy. Publishers red cloth with blind ruled border and gilt lettering to front board. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt. A particularly nice copy of this rare title by the Author of The Phantom of the Opera. Fine, clean copy in a fine leather binding for Hatchards of London. Contemporary full tan morocco. Spine with raised bands. Compartments double box ruled and pips in gilt. Blind ruling extending onto boards and ending with a floral device around each raised band. Gilt ruled borders, with floral corner pieces and dots on boards. Front board with title in gilt. Triple gilt ruled turn-ins. All edges gilt. Previous owners bookplate to the front paste down endpaper. Some offsetting to the blank endpapers from the leather turn-ins and the bottom corners a little bumped but overall a fine, bright copy in a highly attractive early binding.

Some foxing to several pages but overall a very good example in a fine early leather binding of full dark green morocco. Spine with five raised bands, each with blind ruled line. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Both boards have bevelled edges and are decorated and lettered with elaborate floral and ruled line designs and decorative lettering. Turn-ins with decorative and ruled gilt designs. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Some rubbing to the extremities but overall a very good and attractive copy of this delightful example of Victorian book production. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a highly skilled binder.

Swan Sonnenschein & Co. London. 1888. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (8.7 x 5.9 inches). 8 full page mono plates. A couple of the plates have small ink marks to the margins, not affecting the image at all. Overall a veyr good copy in publishers blue cloth with black and gilt illustration to the front board in between gilt lettering and black double ruled lines at the top and bottom. Spine illustrated and lettered in gilt. Yellow endpapers. Cloth is a bit rubbed and the spine is darkened, although the gilt still very visible. Overall a very good copy of this interesting book. Purports to be the reminiscences, noted down by the author, of an old negro at Apia, the first "white man", i.e. British subject, established in the group.

Phillips, RA; Engraved title page (dated 1808) and 11 plates, all stating Ackermann as publisher, dated 1813 and engraved by Louis Schiavonetti, after Blake's designs. The pages have a little bumping to the edges but well away form the engraved area. Plates a little dusty and toned but the impressions are good. The original portfolio is brown Morocco grained cloth with elaborate blind tooled designs to both boards. Gilt lettering to the front board. Only one small piece of one silk tie remaining.
