Nineteenth-century ownership signature to the front free endpaper of each volume ("W. Wansey"). xxxvi, 287, [1]pp. + 324pp. An acceptable set, the lower board to volume one loose and held by one cord only, the bindings with chipping to the spine ends and wear to the extremities. The contents with pp.75-82 in volume two somewhat loose and protruding from the textblock, similar looseness to a few gatherings in volume one, minor chipping to the blank lower margin of the last 8 pages of volume one, and some light scattered foxing here and there, are otherwise in good order. The uncommon first edition of this educational work for children by the influential Anglo-Irish author Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849).Only two institutional copies recorded by LibraryHub (Bodleian; Trin. Col. Dublin).

Illustrated with 51 woodcuts and 5 volvelles (4 with moveable parts) to the verso of leaves X, XI (with the moveable element absent, as appears to always be the case, and seemingly as issued), XIII, and to the recto of leaves XXIX and XLV. Historiated initials throughout, globe woodcut to the title page, woodcut printer's device to the verso of the final printed leaf. Somewhat enigmatically inscribed in an early hand to the foot of the title page "Georgy dati Florentini" (George of Florence), and further inscribed to the verso of the final printed leaf. A very good copy, the binding secure, although with some cracking in places, and the spine covering with loss at the sewing supports. London: Headley Bros., [1916]. First edition. Octavo. Re-bound in early twentieth-century textured brown paper-covered boards with small watercolour paper onlay depicting oranges to the upper board. Illustrated with 3 tipped-in colour plates, 2 tipped-in monochrome plates, 4 full-page sepia drawings and several headers and tailpieces. 32pp. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a couple of small splash marks to the edges of the upper board and a little wear to the spine ends and corners. The contents with the occasional spot of light foxing and a little creasing to the corner of a couple of the tipped-in plates are otherwise in very good order.
