Collection of verse written to approximate the accented English of French-Indian voyageurs and coureurs du bois, or, as the author states in his introductory note, "half-breed Indian guides." The Francophone pronounciation is represented in the orthography, so interdental fricatives (th-sounds) are written as "d," final consonants are dropped, and the sound of "er" in "water" is made long: "An' den dere air de rapides... Dey make de rivaar music...." Accompanied by the author's photographs of Canadian lakes and forest. OCLC locates only four copies:… Read More

Sixteenth-century Italian brown leather over pasteboard, panel binding tooled in blind on both boards and on spine with rules and a small X-shaped tool used in repeating pattern to form the shape of a Roman cross within multiple borders, which may be considered an odd decoration for a secular text. Amsterdam: Van Zoetendaal, 2010. First edition. Hard cover. As New. 30 cm; about [135] pages, chiefly color photo illustrations with captions in Dutch and English. Introductory remarks (by André Loor) in Dutch and English. Bound in cushioned faux leather, stamped in silver. From the introduction: The police band in Suriname cannot pride itself on being the oldest band in Suriname, nor even that it is very old, but it can take pride in having become an integral part of the social and cultural life in Surinamese society. The band has always been of great significance to the musical life in Suriname not only because of the weekly concerts they gave in The Park and on the former Government Square but also because of their repertoire. Photographer and artist Sara Blokland has followed the band and pictured in an untraditional way the history of the band and the people encountered by them.
