Description:
New York, NY: Chekhov Publishing House, 1952. 387 pages; 22 cm. Text in Russian. First complete edition. The book's cover displays signs of foxing.

This fictional work, rich with autobiographical elements but distinct from an autobiography, is considered a seminal piece by Ivan Bunin, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Crafted during his emigration period, it stands as his sole full-length novel. Composed intermittently over 12 years, from 1927 to 1939, in France, it wasn't until 1952 that the first comprehensive edition of the novel was published by Chekhov Publishers, based in New York.

During the Cold War era, there emerged a significant initiative in the United States to support the dissemination of Russian literary works. Among these efforts, the Chekhov Publishing House in New York, active in the 1950s and 1960s, played a crucial role in making Russian émigré literature accessible to a wider audience.

лебом единÑм) is a 1956 novel by Vladimir Dudintsev, serialized in Novy Mir and recognized as a literary symbol of the Khrushchev Thaw. The story centers on an engineer clashing with bureaucratic obstacles to implement his invention, resonating with Soviet readers who saw it as a critique of the system. Initially, the novel received cautious praise from Soviet officials but later faced severe criticism, including from Nikita Khrushchev, who condemned it as misleading. Despite official disapproval, the public continued to support Dudintsev's work, and it became a bestseller, with copies selling at a premium on the black market. The…

14,5 cm. 243 pages. Text in Russian. Light wear and foxing.

In his 1931 pamphlet "The Dream Factory," Ilya Ehrenburg offers an incisive analysis of the inner workings of the Hollywood movie industry. He presents a vivid portrayal of Adolph Zukor, tracing his journey from a humble craftsman to the formidable president of Paramount Pictures. Ehrenburg illustrates how the film industry captivates audiences across America and Europe. He describes the common moviegoer who, with spare change in hand, ventures into the cinema to witness the fortunes of others unfold on the screen, allowing him to dream of grand possibilities-from marrying wealthy American heiresses to inventing perpetual matches or capturing notorious criminals and being hailed a hero. In this world, the movie screen serves as a shield against the noose and the bomb, offering an escape from…
