Description:
XXVI, 248 pp.First edition of a rare work about Hadhramaut, a region on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula, with the very large folding map included. This map, made by geographer Hermann von Wissmann (1895-1979), was the first map ever made of the region that was based on measurements and surveying.Daniël van der Meulen (1894-1989), an Arabist and consul at Jeddah, was one of the first Westerners to visit Hadhramaut. This work, complete with numerous photographs and illustrations, relates his journey and offers a fascinating insight into the political, social and economic situation of this region in the 1930s. With two owner's inscriptions on the first flyleaf ("Amersfoort, 5 dec. 1932" and "A. groothoff"). Without the dust-jacket. The spine and part of the back board have faded, the top edge of the back board is slightly bumped. The endpapers, french title-page and page 248 have browned edges, foxed throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Macro 1585; cf. Rentz, G., Recent literature on…

[4], 24; [8] pp.First and only edition of a series of illustrations of the decorations displayed during the inauguration of William IV, Prince of Orange, who in 1747 became the Stadtholder of all the United Provinces and general and admiral of the Dutch army and navy. Together with the very rare continuation (published 15 years later), displaying the triumphal arches erected upon William IV's return to The Hague on 6 June 1747.Around 1740 the Dutch Republic got involved in the War of the Austrian Succession, which lead to the occupation of States' Flanders (the northern part of Flanders, part of the Dutch Republic since the Eighty Years' War) by the French in 1747. This caused an enormous unrest in the Republic as this fully exposed the weakness of the Dutch defences, leading to a strong wish for restoration of the stadtholderate. When this was restored by the inauguration of William IV, it brought an end to the Second Stadtholderless Period (1702-1747).Water stains in the margins of several leaves…

Description:
29, [1] pp.Second edition of an early treatise claiming to have squared the circle (geometrically constructed a square matching the surface area of a given circle, shown to be impossible in 1882). Falco (Valencia 1522-Madrid 1594), a humanistic poet and mathematician, and a Knight of the Order of Montesa, seems to have been a better poet than mathematician. His treatise has been called "more than commonly worthless" (De Morgan, A budget of paradoxes, 1872, p. 36), but it ends with a charming poem. In the first verse, the disappointed squared circle wonders who robbed it of its former noble form, and in the second Falco replies. With the direction line (containing the quire signature and/or catchword) shaved on 4 pages, but still in very good condition, binding fine. An ill-fated attempt to solve an impossible problem, here by someone who thought he had succeeded.l Anet 12863042; Netherlandish books 12099, 12097 (misdated) and probably 12098 & 12100 ; USTC 406886, 402179 (misdated) and probably 407081…

Description:
Woodblock with the Arabic title Book of the Song of songs of Solomon followed by a reference to the Hebrew title Shir hashirim (Song of songs) transcribed in Arabic, probably produced in the Ottoman regions of the Levant for a rural printing office. A rare survival of an 18th-century printers woodblock from the Islamic world, and also an important witness to cross-cultural printing for minority audiences in the Ottoman world. We include an inked impression of the block on 18th-century paper paper, clearly not printed recently, because it does not show the worm holes that now appear in the block. The text reads: "Safr Nishd al-nishad li-Süleyman waighal ba-lAbraniyat Shir hashirim".The inked impression of the woodblock is pasted to a piece cut out of a Croatian printed prayer book compiled by a Croatian Catholic in Bosnia, Rafo Bariic, Pasha duhovna (Spiritual pasture), on spirituality and Passover, first published at Rome in 1842.Some small wormholes in the wood, post-dating the…

[1], 142, [1] ll.Second recorded copy of the second edition of the extremely rare first spiritual "handbook", a posthumous collection of 35 short lessons and advisory texts plus an appendix, all written by the leading Dutch Anabaptist and "arch-heretic" David Joris (ca. 1501/02-1556), the nine dated ones from 1544 to the year of his death. Many remained unpublished until they appeared in the Handt-boecxken around 1590, taken from Joris's manuscripts in the hands of his family. The appendix contains an untitled series of 16 brief advisory texts, each beginning with a different letter of the alphabet in order from A to Q. The book closes with an index, listing the 35 titles alphabetically. Although Joris's name appears nowhere in the book, the titles page says the texts were written by "D.J.".At least four editions of the first Handt-boecxken appeared, from ca. 1590 to 1616, but each is known only from 1 or 2 surving copies or in one case only from a surviving title-page and a lost copy. Description:
[164] ll.Third (first illustrated) edition of Osiander's Harmony of the Gospels. It brings the four Gospels together to make a single narrative, prefaced by a comparative synopsis of the content of the four Gospels. Having studied Hebrew and Greek in Ingolstadt, Andreas Osiander (1496-1552) became a priest in 1520. He subsequently came in contact with supporters of the Reformation and became a prominent Protestant leader. In 1548 he was appointed professor of theology in Königsberg. His last years there were, however, overshadowed by the bitter debates caused by his controversial doctrine of divine justice: the so-called "Osiandrische Streit". Osiander's writings consist for the most part of expositions of the scripture, sermons and essays on the theological controversies of the day.Osiander's present Harmony of the Gospels is his only work that was also published outside Germany. The woodcuts are ascribed to Levinus (Liévin) de Witte (ca. 1503- 1578 or soon after), a painter, designer and perhaps…
