Description:
SCOTT, SIR WALTER. Halidon Hill; A Dramatic Sketch, From Scottish History. 8vo. Original printed wrappers, untrimmed. Printed for Archibald Constable and Co., Edinburgh; And Hurst, Robinson, and Co. London, 1822. First Edition. Presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Sir Alexr Keith Knight Marischal Ravelston from His Affectionate Kinsman The Author." Sir Alexander Keith, a close friend of Scott, was founder of the Keith Prize, a biennial prize for the most important discoveries in science made in any part of the world. Although this lesser-known work is written as a dramatic sketch, Scott tells us in the preface that it is not intended to be produced on the stage. Halidon Hill tells the story of the reconciliation between two feuding Scottish chiefs before they die valiantly in the fight against Edward III of England. The Eclectic Review of September 1822 says, "This is a 'sketch,' but it is from the hand of a master; and there is a chasteness and simplicity in the poetry, such… Read More

Turici (Zurich): impensis Ziegleri et fil, 1790. First Edition. Description:
8vo. ½ calf over marbled boards; spines with five raised bands, 2 black morocco labels, gilt lettered; leaf edges red speckled. London: Published by the Author. 1829. 2 volumes. Although not a Catholic, Cobbett took up the cause of Catholic Emancipation. Between 1824 and 1826, he published his History of the Protestant Reformation, a broadside against the traditional Protestant historical narrative of the British reformation, stressing the lengthy and often bloody persecutions of Catholics in Britain and Ireland. At this time, Catholics were still forbidden to enter certain professions or to become members of Parliament. The law was no longer enforced, but it was still officially a crime to attend mass or build a Catholic church. Although the politician William Wilberforce also worked and spoke against discrimination against Catholics, Cobbett continued a strident and racist opposition to the noted reformer, particularly after Wilberforce published his Appeal in Behalf of the Negro Slaves in the…

Illustrated with 358 full-page engraved, hand-colored plates. 4to. Bound in original contemporary publisher's ½-leather-backed cloth, gilt decorations on spine, 5 raised bands, all edges marbled. London: Groombridge and Sons, 1851-1857. First Edition. First Issue. 6 volumes. Only the first edition sets were fully hand colored. In later editions the backgrounds were not colored. Morris's A History of British Birds was first published in monthly parts from June 1850, over a period of 7 years. Each part contained 24 pages of letterpress and 4 hand-colored plates. It was a resounding success. The inspiration for the book came from the renowned English printer, Benjamin Fawcett, who approached Morris to write the text when Morris became Vicar of Nafferton. Alexander Francis Lydon, one of Fawcett's principal engravers, contributed much in technique and design. Morris was a popular writer on natural history in general, and birds in particular. His first book, Guide to an Arrangement of British Birds, was…

Woodcut printers device on title-page; several decorative woodcut initials and head-pieces. 8vo. Bound in 18th-century mottled calf, rebacked in modern leather (retaining old endpapers); marbled endpapers, edges marbled. (Geneva) Henri Estienne, 1573. Scarce Editio Princeps of The Contest of Homer and Hesiod, a Greek narrative (of uncertain authorship) that expands on a remark made in Hesiods Works and Days to recount an imagined poetical duel between Homer and Hesiod, in which Hesiod wins a bronze tripod, which he dedicates to the Muses of Mount Helicon. The work clearly dates to the 2nd century AD, for it mentions Hadrian (line 33). Friedrich Nietzsche deduced that it must have an earlier precedent in some form, and argued that it derives from the…
