Description:
1942. No Binding. Very Good. World War II photograph by Dimitri Baltermants entitled "Carrying Away The Dead" from the series "That's How It Was" Russian photograph of grieving women collecting the frozen dead from a battlefield and loading them into a cart. The title of this work is: "It was like this: Carrying Away the Dead 1942". This evocative photograph is worth a thousand words in depicting the Russian battlefront horrors of the war. From the N.Y. Times Obituary: Mr. Baltermants, who was born in 1912, taught himself photography as a young man and became a staff photographer for the Soviet Government newspaper Izvestia in 1937. During the war, he photographed for Izvestia and for the newspaper of the Soviet Army. His pictures, like those of the American photographer Robert Capa, focused as much on the pain and suffering caused by war as on the valiant struggle of combat.
