Author attribution (William Dukes Jones) is from a manuscript note on the fly-leaf of the copy held in the New York Public Library. Near fine with slight even sunning to spine.

One page on mourning stationary from T. W. Jackson, the curator of the Hope Portrait Collection in Oxford, to an unnamed recipient regarding a query for a portrait, "Hope Port. Coll[ection], Oxford, 22 Oct. 1909. Dear Sir, We have no portrait of a John Paine [sic], the translator of Villon, in the collection: and I don't remember having seen one anywhere. His name does not occur in the ALA Index of portraits contained in printed books. I am, yours... T. W. Jackson." Referring to the English poet, translator, and friend to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Payne, Jackson may have missed the entries and holding in the collection, due to a misspelling of Payne's name (viz Paine).

Folio, 13 1/2 x 9 1/4. 570pp. Magnificently bound in contemporary full dark brown calf, neatly re-backed with original spine laid down, with lavishly gilt-decorated design work on both covers comprising corner sections and a central geometric piece showing strapwork design as negative space behind thick gilt onlay work. Spine with five raised bands. The scarce first edition of the collected works of James I, King of England, said to be, "One of the finest specimens of Jacobean book-production," including, in part, to its highly accomplished copper-engraved frontispiece by Simon Pass, of James enthroned in robes, as well as an additional engraved title-page. Tokyo, 1938. 4to. Color printed wrappers, extensively illustrated Japanese children's book. Ikyuu san was the name of a famous priest boy in Japanese lore. Spine chipped, corner wear, occasional soiling, overall a very good copy of an interesting Japanese Pre-WWII children's book with a wide variety of stylistic art.

London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1848. First edition. First edition. Superb full crushed morocco (brown) with bold gilt strap-work and flower design on both covers, hearts covering whole of both covers and spine, by De Sauty (signed 'De Sauty' on front turn-in). A wonderful binding by De Sauty (1870-1949), active in London from 1898-1923, worked for Riviere & Son as well as the Hampstead Bindery. Binding hinges skillfully repaired, some wear to spine, otherwise near fine and distinctively Art Nouveau binding.

Original color pictorial paper covered boards with exquisite and intricate designs on both covers and spine, originally decorated endpapers. Illustrated by Richard Doyle. Fragile covers show wear predominantly at outer edges and at spine leaving most, if not all of the pictorial images on both covers and spine in tact, a very rare survival considering the delicacy of the paper covering. At the time of research, we could not locate any other copies in the original binding. AEG. Internally clean and bright.

One of the most uncommon of all Copeland and Day titles to be found in first edition, and this an exemplary copy with no sunning of spine or brown-toning to endsheets, both nearly always found even in otherwise fine copies. Top of spine with very small chipping. A rare example of a sought after "Nineties" title.

An exceedingly scarce survival, the earliest of works by Lily Montague (1873 ñ 1963), influential female Jewish author, suffragist (she was a founding member of the Jewish League for Woman Suffrage), and early influencer on the rights of women who played a major role in Progressive Judaism. We can find no other copies of this early work by Montagu in the marketplace, and few are known to have survived, much less a Presentation Copy. Prayers for Jewish Working Girls (1895) is a collection of twenty-five prayers in vernacular English dedicated to the members of the West Central Girlsí Club, founded in 1893 by Lilian and co-led by her and her sister Marian Montagu. Original teal blue cloth boards with stunning Nouveau pictorial covers by Arnold Lyongr¸n, stamped in white housing the loose sheets, as issued. Decorative title page and forward by Lyongr¸n, printed in lavender. With 24 superb color-tinted plates, printed in blue, green, and browns, with border rule and adjacent decorative lettering in orange. Photolithography and typography by C. G. Roeder, Leipzig. This very scarce first edition was followed in 1903 by a similar volume with 48 plates, but this original edition with 24 color-tinted monochromatic plates is very much the desired edition. The images blend various motifs of the human form with plants and animals, vases, fish bowls, bird cages, stained glass, etc., all in classic Jugendstil Art Nouveau style. Wien, 1900. 8 x 9 3/4 inches, on artboard. Offered here is a wonderful original pastel on artboard by the renowned Austrian painter Julius Veith (1858-1925) entitled "Willow Branch." Measuring 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches, representing a fine example of Jugendstil, signed and dated Wien 1900. This painting features a woman in period dress holding in an outstretched arm a spray of willow flowers, with willows visible in the foreground as well as background. Signed, "E. Veith, Wien, 1900. Veith took classes in Vienna at the Museum of Applied Arts from Professor Ferdinand Laufberger, capping off his studies by creating sgraffito (special plaster wall decoration) for exhibition buildings at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. He then returned home, where he assisted his father with painting churches, synagogues and other ceremonial buildings. This was followed by several study trips; to Italy, Belgium and Tunisia. The classic Jugendstil book, marvelously illustrated by the great Freyhold, with twelve full-page color pictures. "Freyhold's picture books are marvels in the early development of the picture book of the 20th century" (Klaus Doderer). -The pictures, "freyholding in their unspeakably immovable untouchedness and childhood" (ER White 1902 to Richard Dehmel) show us the animals of the rural environment (cows, sheep, pigs, pigeons); only the last illustration with parrots puts the viewer into an exotic mood. Tall, narrow quarto (12 x 7 inches) Original publisher's black card paper wrappers, Japanese bound with black ties across spine in lattice fashion (i.e. bound as a book block with cord stitching), with superb illustrated covers. Number 88 of a Limited Edition of Only 200 Copies. Printed on thick paper on one-side only with outside edges uncut forming at two-ply sheet. With highly expressive drawings, vignettes and initials in the text by Charlotte Veit. The Eskimo fairy tale was recounted by Heinrich Johannes Rink after transmission from E. Gross "The beginnings of art." A most distinctive and certainly unusual Insel-Verlag production. Corners very slightly worn, else near fine.

Leipzig: Alfred Hahn, 1920. IN ORIGINAL PRINTED DUST WRAPPER. Quarto. Blue cloth backed, color pictorial paper covered boards. Eleven pages of full and half-page color illustrations by Walthar Caspari, delicately designed color endpapers. A fine copy in a dust wrapper that has been clipped off at the bottom, otherwise it is near fine. Book as new. A most scarce and beautiful book in this condition.

Amsterdam: C. M. Van Gogh, 1895. First edition. First edition. Original striking color pictorial paper covered boards with paper spine (repaired). Each page printed on one-side only uncut at the outer edges (as issued). Vignetter illustration on title page and 20 superb whole-page illustrations by Theo. Van Hoytema (1863-1917) was a celebrated Dutch artist, illustrator, lithographer and bookbinding designer who is best known for his lithographic pictures with bird stories. This classic book with early Jugendstil influences, was printed by C. M Van Gogh, who was the uncle of the artist Vincent Van Gogh. Spine rather crudely repaired with paper tape, else a very nice copy of a striking and noteworthy children's book.

Leipzig: B.G. Teubner, 1890. Tall folio. 20 x 14 inches. In original publisher's green printed wrappers (with folder mounts in which to place the plates) with attractive cover printed in red and black of stylized poppy design. 12 full-size card art paper plates printed in stunning sepia colors of varying hues by Hasslinger and Gansloser, two noted artists of the period. The design quality is highly period style Jugendstil, bearing strong Art Nouveau influence. With one-page introductions, making a total of 13 leaves, printed on one side only. An amazingly well-preserved set with minimal wear, near fine. No copies found on internet at time of writing.
