Tipped on to a much larger mount than that published in "Men of Mark". Coburn's first book of portraits "Men of Mark" was published in 1911 (it was followed some years later by More Men of Mark) features 33 portraits of artists, thinkers and writers such as George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, Henry James, Auguste Rodin, Henri Matisse, Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, Frank Brangwyn, William Butler Yeats, Robert Bridges etc. Coburn's introductory text provides a running commentary on his pursuit of his subjects and their eventual capture on film. An appeal for moderation, with a preface attributed to Edmund Burke First edition in English of Brissot's tract, first edition of Mémoires Secrets. Brissot, a key figure in the Girondist faction in the French Revolution, originally published this work in France in 1793, a few months before he was guillotined. Taking the form of an open letter to his constituents, it warns of the "anarchism" of the Jacobin faction, and appeals for moderation. The present edition was translated by William Burke, and has a lengthy preface purporting to be by the translator but frequently attributed to Edmund Burke. Burkean scholar David Bromwich writes that the preface, "seldom reprinted, is as close as Burke comes to a documentary treatment of the French Revolution, and it displays in a brief compass his exceptional gift for historical narrative. Stamford, CT: Mosaic Images:, 2001. Delightful image of Silver at the keyboard during the sessions for Detroit sax-player Monterose's sadly underrated self-titled debut for Blue Note. Cofounder and house photographer Francis Wolff's extensive archive of images, the majority previously unseen, had remained in storage for many years before Blue Note revivalists Mosaic began to use them for their reissue series. For a brief period they produced limited edition fine art prints of a selection, this being image #38, number 3 of 150. High quality silver gelatin print (253 x 203 mm), "Photograph by Francis Wolff" and "Mosaic Images" wet-stamps verso with pencilled session details, inventory number and limitation. Near fine. Thesaurus Philo-Politicus. Daniel Meisner., c.1640. Very interesting and crisp impression, showing the view over the port of Aden, present Yemen. This attractive rare view of Aden was published in Daniel Meisner's 'Thesaurus Philo-Politicus'. Published in 1623-30 it ranks among the classic collections of city views alongside those of Munster, Braun and Hogenberg and Merian. Text is supplied by J. L. Gottfried and the plates by Mathias Merian, Sebastian Furck and G. Keller. Each scene displays a foreground message embodying a moral explained below in Latin and German verse. Meisner was born in Chomutov in what is now the Czech Republic but little is known of his life. The introduction to this work cites him as a 'Poeta Laureatus'. An example of the second state as published c.1640, a letter is placed before the pagination upper right. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Fine condition Size: 14.5 x 9.5 cm. Signed subscriber copy, for Rebecca West First edition, first impression, a superb literary association copy from among the 40 "A" subscribers' copies, with the part-printed limitation label to the front free endpaper completed in ink by Virginia Woolf and signed by her, this copy for the novelist Rebecca West (1892-1983). West's nuanced review of Jacob's Room, Woolf's first full novel published by the Hogarth Press, appeared in the New Statesman a month after she received her copy: "[Woolf] has again provided us with a demonstration that she is at once a negligible novelist and a supremely important writer." Woolf, in return, likened West's novel The Return of the Soldier to an "overly stuffed sausage". Bosanquet (1880-1961) was the secretary of Henry James, and had been twice published by Virginia Woolf's Hogarth Press: first in 1924 with Henry James at Work, then in 1933 with a study of Paul Valery. Inscribed copies of this early Woolf novel are very scarce. Octavo. Original cloth, titles gilt to spine. With the dust jacket. Housed in a navy blue cloth folding case. Spine sunned through jacket, a sound copy, clean within and in general very good, with the jacket toned around spine, a little rubbed to ends and corners with some minimal tissue repair to verso.

Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) was a German-born French composer, cellist and impresario. He is remembered for his operettas of the 1850's-1870's He was a powerful influence on later composers of the operetta genre, particularly Johann Strauss, Jr. and Arthur Sullivan.
