Description:
London: Clarke, Beeton, and Co. .., ad Thomas Bosworth, [1853].. viii,504pp. Original publisher's brown cloth, decorated in blind lettered in gilt (BAL's binding A for this edition - no sequence established), endsheet adverts printed in blue. Cloth a bit rubbed, with some modest wear at the extremities, front inner cracked, about very good. One of the several roughly contemporary UK printings of Stowe's justification and defense of her depiction of "Life among the Lowly" in her 1852 bestseller. This copy is of the form including the complete text and Stowe's Preface, but does not include the inserted two leaves printing an Appendix that appear in later copies. As often, this copy includes the tipped-in advert slip for Goodell's THE AMERICAN SLAVE CODE IN THEORY AND PRACTICE. According to BAL, the earliest of the London printings appear to have preceded the Boston edition. BAL 19357.

Description:
Paris: Librairie Fischbacher, 1931.. [12]pp. plus 30 plates. Small octavo (16.5 x 12.2 cm). White wrapper, printed in black, with wrapper illustrations by Hans Arp. As with other copies we have seen, the lower edges of the textblock and wrapper are trimmed slightly askew. As well, the two center bifolia were never secured by the binding staples and are laid in, and the wrapper is modestly tanned and hand-soiled, internally very good. First edition of this important essay by the Polish poet and art historian/theoretician (1903-1983), published soon after establishing his residence in Paris and his editorial responsibilities on L'ART CONTEMPORAIN. The black & white plates include reproductions of works by Picasso, Cezanne, Monet, Matisse, Braque, Leger, Prampolini, Mondrian, Arp, Ernst, Miro and others. OCLC: 32616379.

Description:
[New York]: Nadja, 1986.. Quarto. Cloth, paper label. Some small smudges in the upper spine corner of the lower board, otherwise about fine. First edition, clothbound issue. One of an unknown number of unnumbered copies bound thus, in addition to 26 lettered copies, and 100 numbered, and some unnumbered copies, in wrappers, all signed by the author and the artist. This was the poet's own copy, inscribed to him by the artist ("Thanks De") on the colophon, with an original pencil drawing (with colored highlights) of two figures, seemingly the poet and the artist, on the colophon. Snodgrass's library blindstamp appears in the upper forecorner of the free endsheet.

Description:
[Cambridge, MA: Houghton Library, 21 April 1943].. [8]pp. Sewn printed wrapper. About fine. First edition. Copy #7 of 75 numbered copies printed in Caslon Old Face on Laverstroke mould-made paper. Published as Houghton Library Brochure Number Three. A strongly worded letter deprecating the Japanese as "shifty little beggar[s]," here printed while the Pacific War raged. An excerpt from another supposed Kipling letter about the loss of his son at the Front in 1915 is included in the terminal "Editorial Note." Richards identifies that excerpt as from "one of the Sylvester Dorian forgeries," the legitimacy of which were controversial by 1943, to say the least. RICHARDS A455.
