Description:
Lendinara: Dalla tipografia Michelini, 1804. Original edition. Very Good. Octavo (17 cm); 16 pages. In woodblock-printed floral-patterned wraps in red, white, and green, coloring hand-finished. A rhapsody written for the appointment of one Lodovico Bonardi to head the monastery attached to the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità in Monte Oliveto, in central Verona. The verses, by the abbot Lorenzo Mischiati, bear affinity with Dante's Paradiso but also with the lyrics of the 20th-century popular song Volare: the poet takes flight into the upper spheres and sees beautiful "sisters" as well as genies and heroes who sing the praises of the new abbot. Inconsequential to be sure, but interesting, and bound in extraordinarily lovely wraps.

Modena: Presso la Società Tipografica, 1790. Original edition. Very Good. Octavo (22 cm); 117, [1] pages, and four full page engraved plates hors texte by Antonio Rosaspina. Half-page vignettes by the same artist close each of the four cantos. Engraved roundel on title page. LACKS final blank leaf G/12. In plain paper covers attached to texblock with codex stitching revealed along spine. Remains of manuscript title on spine ("Bandettini"). Corners bumped. Old repairs on verso of final leaf. Negligible foxing. The whole preserved in custom-made clamshell box. References: Ferri, 33; Parenti, "Rarità bibliografiche" (1958) vol 4, p. 72. At age 27, wildly famous for her remarkable performances of improvised poetry and dance, Teresa Bandettini published this narrative poem about love, jealousy, and grief. This work, and others to follow, betrayed the author's ambition to exceed her career as an "improvvisatrice" and compose written poetry. Indeed, Bandettini was a driven artist. She was…

[Geneva]: [Cramer et Bardin], 1775. Edition encadré," volume 11.. Octavo (21 cm); 420 pages, portrait frontispiece (by Martinet) and 21 engraved plates. Text within typographic borders. Bound in contemporary etched leather scored in gilt. Spine decorated in gilt, with leather labels. Marbled endpapers. Boards somewhjat splayed. Negligible loss at head and tail. Hinges starting. Upper joint reinforced. Contents clean. References: Cohen-De Ricci, 1042; Bengescu, Voltaire IV, #2141 Volume 11 only of the 40-volume "edition encadré" published in 1775 by Cramer et Bardin, the last edition of Voltaire's works published under the author's supervision. Then as now, La Pucelle d'Orleans was Voltaire's most consumed work, so it is not surprising to find this volume detached from the its 39 companions. Voltaire's greatest poem, but not the one you read in school. With Ariosto in mind, Voltaire rewrote the Joan of Arc story with all the wit and critical distance of an 18th-century libertine. The…

Bologna and Bassano: Giovanni Antonio Remondini, [1672]. Good. 12mo (15 cm); 96 pages, signed A-D\12. Four full woodcut illustrations, two woodcut tail-pieces. Date from dedication letter. In contemporary vellum over boards, worn, with small cross-shaped laceration on upper board and small abrasion on spine. Utility paper stock has toned, and first and last leaves are not without stains. References: Michel, II, p. 274, #5; Carnelos, "I libri da risma," #56; "Remondini: un editore del settecento" p.307, # 7;BL Italian 17th century, p. 128 (1678 ed.). Venetian laws prevented provincial publishers like Remondini to print important books or first editions. Despite the restriction, the house of Remondini made a fortune from "libri da risma," popular reading printed on cheap paper and distributed to booksellers in sheets. Such is this little manual on hunting with an arquebus (a sort of match-lock firearm). Apart from extensive instruction on the care and usage of the gun, the volume also…

Not in Melzi. No copies located. Apparently unrecorded booklet with text and illustrations produced completely in lithograph.
