Description:
American or British, After 1760. Very Good. 1 leaf, 200 x 323mm; watermark of crowned lion with scepter and fascia of arrows, very like Churchill #88, which he identifies as English colonial, dated 1762. Seven columns of numbers, with brief explanation on verso. Folds, some beginning to split. Manuscript 18th-century game or puzzle which allows whoever knows the key to accurately guess anyone's age (or chosen number in a "pick-a-number" scenario). We won't divulge the secret--but it has to do with binomial number systems--and it works! Similar magic age tables persist to the present day in a somewhat different form.

Description:
Bologna?, XIV century. Good. Manuscript leaf on vellum, 287 x 462 mm. 43 lines in two columns round gothic recto and verso, surrounded by the "glossa ordinaria," the standard commentary on the text. There are several additional glosses in in the margins in cursive script of a later date, possibly as late as the early XV century. One such annotation cites Bartholomaeus de Saliceto, who flourished in the late XIV century. On verso, at the beginning of the De repudianda ve abstinenda hereditate, is a fine initial with a portrait in profile, and two painted initials in the gloss. Twelve initials decorated with elaborate pen-work. Rubricated in red and blue. Provenance: Stanley H. Levy, purchased from Bernard M. Rosenthal. Authenticated for Rosenthal by Thomas Izbicki, Institute of Canon Law, in 1978. Folds; text faded from lower portion of recto. Portrait bright and clear.

Description:
London: Printed for J. Bumpus, 1820. Second edition. Very Good. 15cm; viii, [13]-364 pages, and engraved frontispiece showing the embrace of Hector, Andromache and Astyanax. Bound in later reddish niger morocco inlaid with faux "cords" in contrasting red. Border, ornaments and title stamped in blind. Marbled endleaves. Very nice binding, apparently not signed. Minor shelf wear. This catholic survey of "amatory customs" ranges through various national and tribal practices in some detail, occasionally touching on kinship systems, and generally quiet about sex . The section on New Orleans, for instance, documents the separate "white" and "colored" aristocracy, each with their own rules of courtship. Remarkable binding.
