Considered a great American novel, it was first published in 1851. This edition was published by Easton Press in 1981 as one of its "100 Greatest Books Ever Written" series. First edition, first printing of this collector's edition, no dust jacket (as issued). Quarto, 9 7/8" tall, with black leather boards with gilt title and ornaments to covers and spine, with four raised spans on spine. Pale blue ribbon with matching Pale blue moire silk endpapers, all edges gilt, smyth sewn binding. No names, markings or bookplates. A fine, bright copy of a finely produced edition of this great American novel.

Textblock is tight, pages are bright with no foxing Beautiful binding of full red leather, gilt stamped and blind stamped with trefoils, with title and author gilt stamped on front cover. No Binding. Fine. Red and brown ink on buff paper with black and white opaque pigments, depicting a loosely garbed holy man carrying what seems to be a flute. He appears to be gazing skyward while singing. He has long graceful fingers. The head and facial hair are very detailed. The mouth and eyes are highlighted in white. The top border seems to be festooned with representations of clouds. Condition: Possible light toning in spots. Slight wrinkling to the edges where the paper has been laid down. Fiber matting has a very slight appearance of a water stain. Not examined out of the frame. Dimensions: Drawing 4 1/2" inches x 8 inches. Frame 16 1/2 inches x 12 3/4 inches. Weight: 2 pounds
