Library stamps / markings on title, verso title and one other leaf, but very good. First Edition, and very scarce on the market, with no copies in auction records. ukasiewicz's first book, on the principle of contradiction in Aristotle's writings, marks his earliest attempt to "open up on logic vistas comparable to those opened in geometry by the introduction of non-Euclidian systems" (McCall, Polish Logic, 1920-1938, p. 2). ukasiewicz, a Polish logician and philosopher, introduced mathematical logic into Poland and was one of the principal founders, architects and teachers of the Warsaw school of logic. Norman copy, with his bookplate; 19th-century bookplate of E. G. Graham Little. First Edition. Pringle, Physician-General to the British Army from 1744 to 1752, was the founder of modern military medicine. His Observations "laid down the true principles of military sanitation and the ventilation of hospital wards. Pringle was one of the pioneers of the antiseptic idea, showed that jail fever and hospital fever are one and the same, did much for the better ventilation of ships, barracks, jails and mines, correlated the different forms of dysentery and gave the name influenza to that dread disease. This work [was] the source-book of all subsequent writers"… Read More

London, 1791. Herschel, William (1738-1822). On nebulous stars, properly so called. In Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 81, part 1 (1791): 71-88. With: Home, Everard (1756-1832). Observations on certain horny excrescences of the human body. In ibid.: 95-105. Whole volume, 4to. vi, [2], 127, [1], 26, iv, 129-438, [2, incl. errata]pp. 10 engraved plates. 275 x 215 mm. Calf gilt ca. 1791, spine rubbed, hinges cracked, corners worn. Very good, clean copy. Engraved bookplate of John Douglas, Bishop of Salisbury (1721-1807). First Editions, journal issues. Herschel's paper records his observation in 1790 of the planetary nebula now known as NGC 1514, which caused him to reconsider his hypothesis that all nebulae were in fact star clusters disguised by distance. NGC 1514 "is so close to Earth that William was able to see the central star that in fact is always present in a planetary nebula. Accordingly, William classified the object as a nebulous star. Marveling at what he saw, he… Read More

[8], 43pp. 4 hand-colored engraved plates. Leipzig: Sumptibus Ioannis Godofredi Mueller, 1793. 225 x 186 mm. Half sheep, boards ca. 1793, a little rubbed and spotted. Outer margin of first plate trimmed affecting the plate number only, otherwise a very good, crisp copy. Inscription in a contemporary hand on the front free endpaper. First Edition, a desirable example with hand-colored plates, which are not present in all copies. Treutler obtained his licentiate in medicine from the University of Leipzig with this thesis on parasitic worms, in which he identified some hitherto undescribed species (Tenia albopunctata, Hamularia lymphatica and Hexathyridio pinguicula) and discussed the diseases they cause in their human hosts. The hand-colored illustrations include a transverse section of a human brain infected with Tenia in… Read More

First Edition. Herschel and South, friends since student days and co-founders of the Royal Astronomical Society (1820), collaborated on double-star research between 1821-23, publishing this catalogue of double (binary) stars in 1824 which earned them the Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society over such competitors as Bessel, Struve and Pond. Herschel would eventually prepare a catalogue of 10,300 double stars, devise important computational methods in relation to double stars, and generally establish double-star astronomy in England. Segrè and Chamberlain, colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley, shared the 1959 Nobel Prize in physics for their discovery of the antiproton, a particle with the same mass and spin as the proton but with opposite charge and magnetic moment. Such antiparticles had been predicted in 1928 by Dirac's relativistic theory of the electron, and the first such particle, the positron, had been discovered by C. D. Anderson in 1932. Several rival groups at Berkeley also entered the antiproton hunt, but the Segrè team's experimental ingenuity insured its triumph: "I decided to attack the problem in two ways. One was based on the determination of the charge and mass of the… Read More
