Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner and Co. Ltd. London. 1907. Small 8vo. (6.2 x 4 inches). Fine early twentieth century full vellum hand painted binding. Fine binding decorated with a painted scene on the front cover depicting a woman and two children in a rustic garden scene, the spine is decorated with a matching design of a variety of painted flowers and the back cover has a single painted flower in the bottom left corner. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. The book is miss-titled in gilt and black on the spine reading 'The Christian Year' so the binder may have been working on more than one book at a time and got two mixed up. The binding is unsigned but similar to several made by the Royal School of Art Needlework around the same period and is in remarkably good condition, only some slight wear on the border of the front cover and the gilded bands on the spine-ends.

Arthur L. Humphreys. London. 1897. Large 8vo. (8.7 x 7.2 inches). A circular brown mark to the outer margin of four leaves, otherwise a clean and bright copy in a fine early binding, for Hatchards of Piccadilly, probably by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, but not signed. Full brown morocco. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments lettered, double ruled and decorated with triple dot corner design in gilt. Both boards with double ruled gilt outer borders and double ruled inner panel design with dots to the outer line and floral design, with green dyed centre dots, in each corner. Title lettered in gilt to front board. Board edges ruled in gilt. Inner boards with triple gilt ruled borders to the turn-ins. All edges gilt. Previous owner's armorial bookplate to the front paste down endpaper. A very attractive copy. --- This edition omits the fourth book of this work, concerning the Roman Catholic mass.

Basil Blackwell. Oxford. 1931. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. (8.4 x 6.7 inches). Illustrated with six line drawings and one colour plate (mounted onto the front board) by Ruth Cobb. Inscribed by the Author on the front free endpaper "From another admirer of the original, one and only OLD ARGO, who used to see her at Dublin instead of Bristol. L. A. G. Strong". A very good copy in publishers beige paper covered boards with red lettering and mounted colour plate to the front board. The book is undated but both the British Library and the Bodliean give 1931 as a publication date.

Ornamental designs and letters engraved by the Webbs. Printed in red and black but this copy has been sympathetically hand coloured in the old style throughout making it unique. Publishers original binding of plain oatmeal buckram spine with paper covered boards. Printed paper label on front panel. Marbled paper on boards. Previous owners armorial bookplate on front paste down endpaper. Some chipping to the spine ends otherwise a very good copy.

Top edge gilt. A fine copy of this classic book in an attractive leather binding. Only 3005 copies were printed.

The Roycroft Printing Shop. New York. 1896. First edition, pirated by Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycroft movement. 8vo. Inscribed by the author on the title page, "I repudiate all responsibility for this bowdlerised piracy. Elbert Hubbard, who perpetrated it, is dead. Why not bury it with him? G. Bernard Shaw. 27/5/22." Additionally inscribed by Hubbard on the front free endpaper, "To Leonard D. Abbott with all good wishes from his friend Elbert Hubbard." Original cloth-backed boards. Housed in a blue half morocco slipcase and chemise. A fine copy.

Dean's Rag Book Co.,Pre WW1. 220mm wide x 135mm.Colour pictures of early aeroplanes, airships and trains printed on cotton cloth, 6 leaves. Edges a little frayed. Has the inevitable discolouration, and a few stains, but the colours are still bright. On rear leaf there is a motif of two bulldogs trying to tear the book apart, with logo "Dean's Rag Books. Quite Indestructible". Despite its blemishes, very true. An unusual item.:

NP. 1951. Oblong 4to. (11.5 x 7.9 inches). Beautiful calligraphic manuscript in red and black. Six leaves written on both sides on hand made paper, plus four blank leaves, all sewn in with red cord. In a fine leather binding of full dark brown morocco with bevelled edges to the boards. Multiple blind ruled line borders and gilt ruled panel with floral corner pieces to the front board. A little rubbing and marking to the binding but still a very good attractive volume. ---- The carols included are; God rest you merry, gentlemen, Annunciation Carol, The Shepherd's cradle song, King Jesus hath a garden, Nowell! Nowell!, In the manger he lies, Falan-Tiding, O little town of Bethlehem, The holy well, Midwinter, The infant king, Ding dong merrily on high, A carol of adoration, The first Nowell.

Binding a bit rubbed and bumped but overall sound and the gilt still bright. This copy has a full page original ink self portrait of Orpen on the front blank endpaper, showing the artist painting the famous American Wall Street lawyer and art collector, Paul Cravath. ---- The drawing is inscribed by Orpen at the bottom of the page "My very dear Mr Cravath-It was a big job to tackle on those hot summer afternoons you must admit. All good wishes in 1922.-------(?) William Orpen". Folding Books ltd, London, in association with Country Life. 1947. FIRST EDITION. (5.4 X 4.8 Inches). Folds out showing four scenes, spring, summer, autumn, winter. Each scene with 3 separate layered illustrations, behind a pink front panel with text in a white panel along the bottom of the pages. The whole opening out to a beautifully illustrated square of country scenes, featuring Orlando and her friend Grace. Pink silk ties, the lower missing half of the length. Outer boards with colour illustration to front and publishers advert on rear. Patterned cloth spine. The boards are a little rubbed and knocked to edges but overall a very good, complete copy of this scarce Orlando title with all of the illustrations in bright and fine condition.

Sylvia Beach. Shakespeare and Company. Paris. 1929. FIRST TRADE EDITION. 8vo. (7 x 5.6 inches). Page edges tanned, as usual, a small stain to the fore edge of the first handful of pages and a few minor chips to the edges of a few leaves, otherwise a very good example in the original cream coloured paper wraps, printed in black to spine and both covers. Some loss to the top of the spine, but not affecting the lettering, and a small closed tear and some minor chipping to the extremities. Paper a bit toned and rubbed but overall a presentable copy. There was also a limited edition of 96 numbered copies on thicker verge d'Arches paper issued simultaneously with this issue. This early critique of Joyce's final work was published some 10 years prior to the publication of the finished novel. Part of the incentive to publish was apparently to raise funds for the perennially impecunious Joyce. A myth surrounding this work is that one or both of the two letters of protest were written by Joyce himself. However… Read More

Illustrated with 8 beautiful full page colour plates, each with a printed tissue guard, 104 line drawings throughout the text, plus illustrated endpapers at the front and back, all by Charles Robinson. Small bookseller label to the bottom of the front free endpaper. A fine and spotless copy of the book in publishers dark green cloth binding with gilt illustrations and lettering to the front board and spine. In the rare original illustrated dustwrapper, printed in red and green on beige paper. The red ink on the spine is faded and there are a couple of very small chips but overall this is a very smart example of the wrapper on a truly fine book. This first American edition uses sheets from the English edition, prnited by Ballantyne and Company in London. An uncommon survivor in such lovely condition.

India paper edition. xvi, 1023pp. A neat five line inscription on the front blank free endpaper, otherwise a clean copy throughout. In a fine early leather binding of half dark blue morocco, bound for Hatchards of Piccadilly. Spine with raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments double ruled and lettered in gilt. Blue cloth on boards. All edges gilt. Blue plain endpapers. Some offsetting to the edge of the endpapers, where the leather has touched the page, and just a hint of rubbing to the extremities, otherwise a near fine, beautifully bound, copy.

School arms for St. Paul's School, London, stamped in gilt on front board. Gilt stamped statue bust on the rear board. Marbled endpapers with a blank school prize label on the front pastedown endpaper. All edges gilt Two wide green silk ties to both boards. A fine copy in a fine binding. The binding is unsigned but certainly by a master Binder.
