David Duncan was an accomplished photojournalist who covered World War II and the Korean War. He later joined Life magazine. He was a close friend of Picasso and was the only person allowed to photograph Picasso's private collection. There are over 100 tipped in color plates of his paintings. The book is in very good condition overall, the boards are fresh. There is a stain on the front and back free endpapers and a light stain on the fore edge. The dust jacket is not price clipped, showing the original price of "$24.95 until Dec 31, 61". There are chips to top and bottom edges of dust jacket. See photos.

Published in New York in 1863 by Charles Magnus. Nicely matted and well framed. This broadside map shows the cities, towns, stores, plantations, mills, academies, etc. along the Mississippi River from St. Louis southward through Memphis, continuing through Vicksburg, and ending at the Gulf of Mexico. Each panel is embellished with a vignette of the important city of that area. Two insets list distances: "various points on the Mississippi, from St Louis to New Orleans", and "Distances navigable by steam on Mississippi River and principal its branches". Pigeon Hole" hand-colored copper engraving by Thomas Rowlandson (13 July 1757 ? 21 April 1827) in which is depicted the discomfort and crowding of the common masses gathered to watch a performance at Covent Garden, London. A brief biography of Rowlandson: He was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian Era, noted for his political satire and social observation. A prolific artist and printmaker, Rowlandson produced a wide variety of illustrations for novels, joke books, and topographical works. Like other contemporary pre-Victorian caricaturists like James Gillray, he too depicted characters in bawdy postures. His caricatures included those of people in power such as the Duchess of Devonshire, William Pitt and Napoleon Bonaparte. Condition: Good. Some light toning.
