Description:
Venice: Nella tipografia Picotti, 1810. Only edition. Very Good. Octavo (24 cm); [2], 61, [1] pages. Bound in woodblock-printed polychrome wraps, with the poet's name written in ink along the spine. Only slight abrasions at the head, else about fine. The notable bibliographer Bartolommeo Gamba curated this collection of poems by his neighbor in the town of Bassano del Grappa, Giuseppe Bombardini. Bombardini's day job was in local government, rising finally to the rank of "podestà," the equivalent of the mayoralty. Among the poems written to commemorate weddings and funerals, we find Romantic sonnets dedicated to the summer night, to the Brenta, to two roses, to the month of May.

London and New York: John Lane, The Bodley Head; Dodd, Mead & Co., 1930. Large paper.. hard cover. Very Good. Quarto (26cm); xviii, 65 pages, [16] leaves of plates. Bound in original red cloth stamped in blind with Aubrey Beardsley poppy design . Original dust jacket, with the same design in red on a tan ground. Dust jacket mildly frayed at spine ends, corners and top edge, with a closed tear on the upper panel repaired with cello tape and a closed tear on the lower panel without intervention, yet unusually sound and entire. Cloth about fine. Scattered light foxing in text. The last of the John Lane "Bodley Head" editions of the classic collaboration between Aubrey Beardsley and Oscar Wilde. Lane was the first English publisher of the work in 1894, but it was dropped after the 1930 edition as Allen Lane (John's nephew) transformed the houseinto the more mainstream Penguin Books. This is the large paper quarto version (the book also appeared in a smaller octavo format). Despite the detailed… Read More

Description:
Leipzig: Ludwig Denicke, [1867]. First edition. Hard cover. Good. 35 cm; [2],[2], and 30 color lithograph plates, including title page. Collation includes prospectus (dated 1867) and the preface by Joseph Anton Messmer (also dated 1867). All plates interleaved with blank tissue. Bound in calf over pebbled morocco, quite worn but sound and entire. Scattered foxing, more on tissue guards. First volume of a projected five-volume series on decorated initials from Medieval and Early Modern manuscripts. Examples date from the 12th to the 16th centuries, reproduced by palaeographer Xaver Arnold and calligrapher Edouard Knoll. Impressive printing by Ludwig Denicke. In spite of the appeal for subscribers in the prospectus, the project for further volumes remained unrealized. A second edition was published at the end of the century. We know of no other surviving example of the prospectus.

Florence: Barbèra, Bianchi e Comp, 1858. Collezione Diamante. Good. 48mo (112 mm), xvi, 537 pages; engraved frontispiece portrait with tissue guard. Bound in contemporary green cloth, titled in gilt on spine. A few gilt letters are tarnished. Endleaves discolored. Intermittent light scattered foxing. Reference: Annali bibliografici, 40; Parenti, Rarità bibliografiche, I, 45, #7. The canny Italian publisher Gaspero Barbèra made two brilliant moves practically simultaneously: he developed the vest-pocket 48mo format for Italian classics, and he hired the still-beardless 20-year-old Giosuè Carducci to edit them. This edition of Vittorio Alfieri's neoclassical poems and satires was Carducci's first job, his first published edition with Barbèra. Carducci's preface was characterized as "robust, elegant, and magisterial" in the 1904 annals of Barbèra's editions. Carducci is considered Italy's most significant poet of the unification period. According to Parenti, there are two distinct… Read More
