J.L. Gottfried's Archontologica Cosmica., 1649. Beautiful town plan of Ulm in the seventeenth century, showing all the main buildings (listed on lower edge of engraving). This town plan was one of many engravings originally published in Merian's Theatrum Europaeum that were incorporated into later editions of Gottfried's chronicles. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Archontologia Cosmica., 1649. A beautiful view of the Swiss canton of Unterwald. Towns, villages, rivers and lakes are shown and labelled. A key at the bottom lists significant buildings and landmarks, which are picked out in the view by letter. In the top left corner three soldiers in armour stand in a group surrounded by a laurel wreath with a coat of arms depicting a key at the bottom. Below this is a compass rose. Copper engraving. This ethnographic work is the result of the time the Culwicks spent living with the Bena tribe in south-central Tanzania. The Bena first migrated into the highlands of southern Iringa Region (Njombe District) in the early 1800s. In the 1860s some groups migrated down into the river lands of south-western Morogoro Region. This study focuses exclusively on the "Ubena of the Rivers" in Ulanga and Kilombero Districts, Morogoro Region, and reflects the wish of the Bena elders "for a permanent record of their tribal history and customs, to preserve the memory of what must soon be forgotten if not committed to writing" (Preface). First edition in English, first impression, of the first opus in the Ubu plays by Parisian proto-surrealist Alfred Jarry (1873-1907), best remembered for this notorious work and the invention of pataphysics, as well as for riding a bicycle through the streets of Paris painted green in honour of his "green goddess", absinthe. The first edition was published in French in April 1896. Barbara Wright, the translator, wrote the text directly onto litho plates, on which Franciszka Themerson (1907-1988), a Polish, later British, painter, illustrator, filmmaker and stage designer, then drew 204 illustrations. Themerson's continuing involvement with Ubu Roi culminated in a comic-strip version (1967-70) comprising 90 one-metre-long drawings. Kant versus the rationalists Second edition, published a year after the first, of On a Discovery whereby Any New Critique of Pure Reason Is to Be Made Superfluous by an Older One, a self-defence of Kantian philosophy. The publication of Kant's first Critique (of Pure Reason) in 1781 provoked considerable controversy, the field of German philosophy splitting into Kantian and anti-Kantian factions. The two sides pursued an extended dispute across journals, books, and lectures. Among the most dangerous to Kant was the work of Johann August Eberhard (1739-1809), a professor of theology at Halle and a committed Leibnizian rationalist, who had founded the Philosophisches Magazin in 1788 as an organ for Kantian criticism. The Discovery, provoked by Eberhard's early articles in the Magazin, constitutes Kant's primary contribution to the controversy. Ultimately, the Kantians would win the dispute. First separate edition, first printing, of this appeal to liberate Ukraine from Soviet domination, describing the history of the Ukrainian independence movement and the beneficial role of a future independent Ukraine in world affairs. This is one of several known copies with the author's bookplate. The Ukrainian-born Alexander Granovsky (1887-1976) studied at the Kyiv Commercial Institute before emigrating to the United States in 1913. He taught zoology at the Universities of Wisconsin and Minnesota from 1922 to 1956. From 1935 to 1963 he was president of the Organization for the Rebirth of Ukraine. He was also member of the senate of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and a founding member of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. First pressing, signed in full by Jones in blue ball-point on the back cover, with slight ink splatter from the forceful initial downward stroke on the "E" of "Elvin" - a not inappropriate "blemish" considering the almost volcanic force of the great drummer's playing, whose autograph on an album is certainly uncommon. Jones is joined here by fellow Coltrane alumnus Jimmy Garrison, and saxophonist Joe Farrell, and in many ways this is Farrell's album. Scott Yanow's review for AllMusic website remarks that this is one of the saxophonist's "finest recordings. Switching between tenor, soprano and flute, Farrell had to be good because he was joined in the pianoless trio by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones. The group performs two standards, three Garrison originals and one by Farrell; it is a tossup as to who takes honors. A superb example of modernist book design First authorized American edition, first printing, trade issue, in the first state dust jacket, with "Reichl" printed on the lower outer corner of the front panel. This edition was conceived by the typographer and graphic designer Ernst Reichl (1900-1980), a "whole book designer" who devised the look of the contents, binding, and dust jacket. The result was "a functional and dramatic design that seemed as modern as the text itself" (Drew & Sternberger, p. 3). Appraising this edition, John Updike wrote that "the title's seven letters, in elongated and squared-off form, take up the entire front surface of the book, echoing the mazelike course the characters pursue through a June day in Dublin" (Updike). Sylvia Beach's notebook records that this copy was one of two dozen sold to "Miss Weaver (on sale)". Harriet Shaw Weaver was Joyce's indispensable patron, without whose munificent backing Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake might never have been published. As a measure of Weaver's paramount importance to Joyce, he inscribed copy number 1 of Ulysses to her. Ulysses was published in imitation of the traditional three-tiered French format aimed at both connoisseurs and readers: 100 signed copies on Dutch handmade paper; 150 large-paper copies printed on heavier vergé d'Arches, and 750 copies on vergé à barbes forming the smaller trade issue.
