Gerard. 22 May 63". X by X is an attractively illustrated magazine featuring the works of student-poets at Wagner College, Staten Island. Loosely inserted is the Wagner Poets's flyer for a poetry reading that took place on 23 November 1962 at the Living Theatre in New York, a venue notable for hosting "the oldest experimental theatre group in the USA" (Malina and Beck, p. 116); Malanga was one of the performers at the event. The flyer's verso prints reviews of the Wagner Literary Magazine, which Allen Ginsberg describes as "the best college magazine in America", while Sir Herbert Read writes "congratulations for an exciting performance". Compiled by the personal Buddhist tutor to the Qianlong emperor – China's Louis XIV – it lists slightly over 1,000 buddhas destined to appear in the present Buddhist aeon. We have traced just three institutional copies. Print was a vital vehicle for spreading Buddhist thought throughout the multicultural Qing empire. First edition, first printing, unrecorded institutionally and uncommon in commerce with the original envelope, of this pack of materials for cadres to stage pop-up anti-Vietnam exhibitions in workplaces and community spaces. Small displays addressing current domestic and international issues were everyday sights in 1970s China. Issuing pre-made sets minimized the risk of overworked local officials preparing their own propaganda in a hurry and inadvertently deviating from the "party line". The present example includes 14 evocative images including of displaced overseas Chinese forced to leave Vietnam, people injured by the army, contested territory along the Sino-Vietnamese border, and an injured Chinese soldier undergoing surgery. A colourful collection of 53 propaganda songs compiled and printed by Red Guards at the Shanghai Aviation Technical School (Shanghai hangkong gongye xuexiao). Small-scale mimeographing was the lifeblood of the Cultural Revolution, allowing grassroots political groups to hold meetings, spread the gospel of radical Maoism, and outperform rivals in the contest to display revolutionary credentials. This collection was published on the eve of National Day by two of the school's ascendant factions: "Winder and Thunder Over Pujiang District" (Pujiang fenglei) and "Chairman Mao's Protection Corps" (Wei dong). The songs include "Mao's Works Are the Most Magisterial", "The Shepherd's Song", "Ah, Crane, May I Borrow Your Wings?", "I've Heard Our Frontier Soldiers Have Come Down from the Mountains", and many others employing the Cultural Revolution's distinctive combination of adulatory, patriotic, and folk rhetoric. Each volume could be purchased separately, with a whole set costing almost 50 yuan - more than a worker's average monthly pay under Mao. Although editions of Mao's works first appeared in the 1940s, a finalized canon of four volumes - covering his activities up to the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 - was incrementally published by Renmin chiubanshe (People's Publishing House) between 1951 and 1960.
