BASILEAE: APUD NIC. EPISCOPIUM IUN., 1558. In 16. Dim. 17x12 cm. Pp. 32 (n.n.)+350+2 (n.n.). Numerose note manoscritte all'interno. Marca editoriale all'ultima carta. Titolo manoscritto al taglio inferiore. Opera collazionata e risultata completa. Legatura in pergamena. Non comune. Copertina in piena pergamena con… Read More

France (probably Besançon), 3rd quarter of 15th century. 239 x 165 mm. (9 3/8 x 6 1/2"). Single column, 15 lines in an elegant gothic book hand. Rubrics in dark pink, line enders in pink and blue with white tracery and gold bezant, several one-line initials and two two-line initials in burnished gold on dark pink and blue ground with white tracery, each side with a panel border composed of hairline vines with gold ivy and bezants, a few colorful flowers, and each inhabited by a colorful bird. ◆Minor chipping to the gold of one initial, trivial smudge to border, but IN VERY FINE CONDITION. From a large Book of Hours probably produced in Besançon, this leaf features very pretty panel borders, each inhabited by a colorful bird with long tail feathers, positioned as if to hold the end of an acanthus leaf in its mouth. Italy, perhaps Tuscany, 15th century, but with a 20th century[?] miniature. 591 x 406 mm. (23 1/4 x 16"). Five lines of text beneath five four-line staves of music, the text in a very large, clean gothic book hand. Rubrics in red, three large initials painted in red or blue with elaborate penwork in the contrasting color, the verso WITH A FINE MODERN REPLICA INHABITED INITIAL showing a young, strong, dark-skinned figure who appears to be Christ, considerable leafy foliage emanating from the letter up and down the left margin (the initial measuring approximately 95 x 110 mm.). ◆Lower outer corner ragged, the hair side of the leaf with minor overall darkening, slight soiling, and faint wrinkling, but a leaf with no serious problems and generally pleasing, especially because the initial is in perfect condition. This leaf contains two immensely charming creatures in the borders: on the recto, the torso of a monk in flamboyant pink robes and a green hood holds an open book and what appears to be a small scourge, while his lower body consists of the hindquarters of a hairy animal; the verso features an oddly shaped beast with a long snout, tail, and two hind legs. Headlines written in French in a later (18th century?) calligraphic hand. ◆Light soiling, rubrics faded, gold somewhat dulled, the frame around the miniature a bit chipped and the lower half the figure's face without paint (questionable as to whether this was a choice by the artist, as it rather resembles a white beard), but these issues mostly minor, and one the whole a very nice specimen, generally clean and smooth, with ample margins and bright color. OF SAINT CLAUDE OF BESANÇON attired in his bishop's regalia, standing in a hallway between two arch-topped doors, reading a book. ◆A fine, fresh leaf, with only the vaguest sense of soiling. Born in 603 and living well into his 90s, Saint Claude (or Claudius) became Archbishop of Besançon in 685 and after his death was so popular that his shrine became one of the major destinations for pilgrims in France, the town where he was buried actually changing its name from Condate to Saint Claude. Description:
BASILEAE: APUD NIC. EPISCOPIUM IUN., 1558. In 16. Dim. 17x12 cm. Pp. 32 (n.n.)+350+2 (n.n.). Numerose note manoscritte all'interno. Marca editoriale all'ultima carta. Titolo manoscritto al taglio inferiore. Opera collazionata e risultata completa. Legatura in pergamena. Non comune. Copertina in piena pergamena con… Read More

LUGDUNI: APUD SEB. GRYPHIUM, 1548. In 16. Dim. 17x11 cm. Pp. 402+(14). Read More
