Description:
Chicago. C.J. Howard. 1927. Collection is contained in original imprinted cardboard C.J. Howard packaging box. 7"x4.75" when closed (horizontal folding card).7"x9.5" when opened. Each card presents a striking Art Deco multicolored lithograph and various coloured borders and decorations printed upon folded heavy card stock. Early in the 1920s Charles Mather, who worked for his familys Chicago printing house, the Mather Company, took an idea brought to him by one of the firms salesmen, Charles Howard Rosenfeld. What Rosenfeld proposed was a series of posters whose focus was to give workers incentive to work better and to work harder. Mather called these prints, Constructive Organization Posters. These posters were made to be placed on office and factory walls and were expected to inspire workers to do their best. Mather sold his posters by subscription and produced more than 300 varieties between 1923 and 1929.In 1925 Rosenfeld and another employee…

Metropolis (Original UK Program for the 1927 film)
by Fritz Lang (director); Thea von Harbou (screenplay, novel)
- Used
London: Wardour Films / Universum Film [UFA], 1927. Original program for the London premiere of the film on March 21st, 1927 at the Marble Arch Pavilion, preceded in English by the US release earlier that month but with different title cards. Director Lang's expressionist masterpiece, based on the novel and written for the screen by then-wife von Harbou, one of the most enduring and influential films of the silent era.
In addition to the normal synopsis, photos, and quotes from the actors, the program presents pieces on the film's groundbreaking special effects and camerawork, and, most interestingly, a side-by-side comparison of a portion of the film script with von Harbou's novel, published the previous year. Any original paper relating to "Metropolis" is scarce, with a 2012 post in Peter Harrington's blog ranking this program among the most difficult items.
Very Good plus in stapled wrappers. Owner stamp to the title page. Wrappers lightly creased horizontally and vertically, front wrapper lightly faded and rubbed, light foxing to the rear wrapper with tiny ink initials to the upper corner. Housed in a custom clamshell box.
Ebert I. Eureka Masters of Cinema 16. Rosenbaum 1000. Schrader Canon Fodder 5. Godard, Histoires du cinema.

[England, 1982]. Poster (420mm x 580mm). Professionally mounted, framed and glazed using archival materials. White text and graphic of a missile caught in a spider's web superimposed over a grey and red photograph of the mushroom cloud over Nagasaki. Light creases from old folds into four, some slight surface scuffs. Very good condition. A rare poster advertising Embrace the Base, one of the key mass actions at the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp. We have been able to locate only two other copies in institutional collections, at the LSE Women's Library and the Glasgow Women's Library. The Greenham Common protest was established in September of 1981 by the Welsh group Women for Life on Earth, who were opposed to the deployment of nuclear tipped Cruise missiles at the site. What was initially planned as a single march became a permanent protest camp in place until…

Brookline, MA: David R, Godine SCARCE a haunting and prophetic broadside, Whitman's words written in 1871 following the Civil War as relevant today as then. 22" w x 30 1/2" h, featuring a 20" w x 19/12" h photogravure, printed by Joh. Enschede, Zonen, Haarlem, Holland, portraying Walt Whitman in profile, enlarged reproduction of 1891 photograph of Walt Whitman by Thomas Eakin at head of text. Underneath, the quote, taken from Whitman's "Democratic Vistas": " We have frequently printed the word Democracy. Yet I cannot too often repeat that it is a word the real gist of which still sleeps, quite unawaken'd, notwithstanding the resonance and many angry tempests out of which its syllables have come, from pen or tongue. It is a great word, whose history, I suppose remains unwritten, because that history has yet to be enacted. It is in some sort, younger brother of another great and often-used word, NATURE, whose history also waits unwritten. WALT…
