GREAT EXPECTATIONS. Second edition in 3 volumes. London, Chapman and Hall, 1861. 8vo. Pp. [4], 344; [2], 351, [1]; [2], 344. Volume 3 is bound without the publisher's catalog.
Later half-calf with cloth boards. All edges as well as the endpapers marbled.. Owner's inscription on front endpaper of volume 3. A Very Good copy, despite foxing to endpapers, moderate spotting and marks to texts, slight creases to a few page corners, and marginal ink calculations volume 1 p 67. The bindings are in Very Good condition with very light shelf wear. The marbled edges are clean and bright. The spines are attractive with the gilding and letter pieces in Fine condition.
Great Expectations was published as a First Edition in five impressions. The true "Second Edition" was published in 1862 as a "New Edition".
In this set all 3 volumes have ``Second Edition" printed on the title pages, Other impressions are usually bound up with title pages describing them as "Second", "Third", "Fourth", or "Fifth" editions, terms that Dickens himself used in correspondence, but they are not editions, rather they are impressions.
Press advertisements suggest July, early August, late August, September and October as the dates that the five impressions were published. This copy has all the textual variants of the second impression noted in list C in Appendix D of the Clarendon Press edition. The editor's own conclusion is "that there are no differences of textual interest between the impressions" (491).See: Walter E. The copy of Sir Charles Oman (inscribed) ,noted military historian, and later, John Sparrow, English academic and book collector, both bookplates appear at front.
