Lorraine Hansberry (1930 – 1965)

Lorraine Hansberry was an African American author and playwright.

She is best known for the play A Raisin In the Sun, which was the first play written by a Black woman to be performed on Broadway. Her works discussed racial segregation, lesbianism, and homosexuality.

Hansberry was also a contributor to the magazine Freedom where she worked with Alice Childress, Paul Robeson, and W. E. B. Du Bois. Her autobiographical play "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black" inspired the song of the same title by Nina Simone.
