New York: The Century Co, 1910. First Edition. Cloth. Near fine. First edition of Abraham Lincoln and Other Addresses in England by the United States Ambassador to Great Britain, Joseph H. Choate, inscribed to Secretary of State Richard Olney.. Octavo, xi, 293pp. Red cloth, title stamped in gilt. Published "October, 1910" as stated on copyright page. Top edge gilt. Solid text block, appears unread. Light sunning to spine. Includes frontispiece portrait. Inscribed on the first free endpaper in Ambassador Choate's hand: "Hon. Richard Olney, with Mr. Choate's compliments, 15 Nov. 1910." The recipient of this book, Richard Olney (1835-1917), served as the United States Secretary of State from 1895 to 1897 under President Grover Cleveland. Born in 1835, Olney was a prominent lawyer before entering politics. During his tenure as Secretary of State, he dealt with the Venezuela Crisis of 1895, where he advocated for the United States' position against European intervention in the Western Hemisphere. He was a staunch defender of the Monroe Doctrine and his efforts to assert U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere. After leaving office, Olney returned to his legal career and remained active in public affairs until his death in 1917.
