About This Item

Boston, MA: Sanborn, Carter, Bazin and Co, 1847. Fourth Edition. Full Leather. Very Good. A remarkably important item in the world of American architecture and design. Originally published in 1830, Asher Benjamin (1773-1845) expanded the publication in subsequent years. This title has been cited as an example of how a publication could influence architectural tastes and shifted American architecture from the Federal Style so popular in the post-Revolutionary War era to the Greek Revival Style that became popular following the initial publication in 1830 and became a common building style in the Northeast, Southern states, and some parts of the Midwest. 119 pp. 4to. 64 Engraved Plates. Orginal full leather boards with a re-backed spine, new first free endpaper inserted. Previous owner's ownership inscription from 1860 in pencil on second free endpaper, contemporary penciled notes on rear pastedown. Clean within, given age and use. Plates alternate, some quite clean and bright, others slightly darkened from age and with some foxing.
