About This Item

New York: Tennis Magazine / Simon and Schuster, 1981. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Quarto, 144pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the publisher's blue cloth. Boards gently curved, else a nice example. In a very good dust jacket with some creases, tears, and internal tape repairs. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Arthur Ashe on the half-title page: "For David, the 1981 Champion, Arthur Ashe." It's unclear why Ashe is referring to - himself, perhaps? He had retired in the previous year, in 1980. Most likely, "David" was simply a fan and amateur tennis player, who Ashe endearingly referred to as the coming year's "champion." In any event, this well-illustrated guide to technique and form is uncommon signed by the tennis great. Ashe was one of the best tennis players of his era, peaking in the mid-1970s. Soon after his retirement, he contracted HIV, most likely from a blood transfusion during a heart bypass surgery in 1983. In the following decade, he founded several AIDS-related foundations, ultimately succumbing to the illness in 1993, aged 49. Ashe was the first internationally successful African-American tennis player.

About Cleveland Book Company

We are proud members of the ABAA.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
