Number four-hundred and eighty-nine of five hundred Edition de Luxe copies produced, and signed by the publisher A. &. C. Black.Illustrated with an etched engraving, a portrait frontispiece, and seventy-three colour plates with captioned tissue guards. With twenty half-tone plates. Collated, complete.Herbert Minton Cundall's beautiful work details the life and work of Victorian landscape painter and illustrator Myles Birket Foster.With the bookplate of Edward J. Weldon to the front pastedown. With the inscription 'repaired by John Cuthbert, bookbinder, Guildhall Library' in pencil to the front pastedown. Restorations to the front and rear hinges have been made.Birket Foster's obituary in The Times upon his death referred to him as "certainly the most popular water-colour artist of our time." In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Light discolouration to back strip, with marks to board perimeters. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Repair to tail of rear hinge. Adhesive residue to head and tail of fore edge of front and rear endpaper and pastedowns. Bookplate and pencil inscription to front pastedown. Internally, binding somewhat strained throughout. Pages bright. Instances of spotting throughout, most concentrated to pages facing plates. Very Good
