The first edition of this work, complete in two volumes.Volume I illustrated with a folding table and fifty tipped in colour plates, and volume II illustrated with fifty further tipped in colour plates. With vignette monochrome illustrations throughout.Collated, complete.A fascinatingly informative study of the history of decorative furniture.Sections are dedicated to subjects including the Chippendale school of woodwork, Colonial furniture in America, Louis XVI period of French decorative furniture, and many others.With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown of each volume. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. In half morocco bindings, with cloth covered boards, and gilt detailing to back strips. A touch of rubbing to volume I back strip tail, and to perimeters of boards. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally bright, with only the odd spot. Near Fine

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
