About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1943. First edition. A fine copy in a nearly fine with some scattered small rubs to front and spine panels. A bright, attractive unread copy. (28493). Octavo, cloth. The final Cellini Smith novel. Cellini Smith is hired to solve a murder case-for a retainer of $26.94. "In just three novels and nine black mask novelettes, Robert Reeves produced some of the most entertaining and offbeat hard-boiled crime fiction of the late Thirties and early Forties." - Pronzini and Muller, 1001 Midnights, The Aficionado's Guide to Mystery and Detective Fiction, pp. 669-70. [Note-Reeves was primarily a Black Mask author and had a dozen pieces of short fiction in the pulps]. Reeves career was unfortunately cut short as he was killed in action in WW II. Pronzini and Muller, 1001 Midnights, The Aficionado's Guide to Mystery and Detective Fiction, pp. 669-70. Hubin, p. 672.
